Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book represents the most systematic examination to date of the often-invoked but rarely examined declaration that "history matters." Most contemporary social scientists unconsciously take a "snapshot" view of the social world. Yet the meaning of social events or processes is frequently distorted when they are ripped from their temporal context. Paul Pierson argues that placing politics in time--constructing "moving pictures" rather than snapshots--can vastly enrich our understanding of complex social dynamics, and greatly improve the theories and methods that we use to explain them. Politics in Time opens a new window on the temporal aspects of the social world. It explores a range of important features and implications of evolving social processes: the variety of processes that unfold over significant periods of time, the circumstances under which such different processes are likely to occur, and above all, the significance of these temporal dimensions of social life for our understanding of important political and social outcomes. Ranging widely across the social sciences, Pierson's analysis reveals the high price social science pays when it becomes ahistorical. And it provides a wealth of ideas for restoring our sense of historical process. By placing politics back in time, Pierson's book is destined to have a resounding and enduring impact on the work of scholars and students in fields from political science, history, and sociology to economics and policy analysis.

Book excerpt: "A History of Matrimonial Institutions" is a book based on the author's belief that a thorough understanding of the social evolution of any people must rest upon the broader experience of mankind and that the human family, in particular, with all that the word connotes, is commanding greater attention. Accordingly, in the first part the attempt is made to present a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the literature and the theories of primitive matrimonial institutions, while the second and the third part feature the history of matrimonial institutions in England and in the United States._x000D_ Volume 1:_x000D_ Analysis of the Literature and the Theories of Primitive Matrimonial Institutions:_x000D_ The Patriarchal Theory_x000D_ Theory of the Horde and Mother-Right_x000D_ Theory of the Original Pairing or Monogamous Family_x000D_ Rise of the Marriage Contract_x000D_ Early History of Divorce_x000D_ Matrimonial Institutions in England:_x000D_ Old English Wife-Purchase Yields to Free Marriage_x000D_ Rise of Ecclesiastical Marriage: The Church Accepts the Lay Contract and Ceremonial_x000D_ Rise of Ecclesiastical Marriage: The Church Develops and Administers Matrimonial Law_x000D_ The Protestant Conception of Marriage_x000D_ Rise of Civil Marriage_x000D_ Volume 2:_x000D_ History of Separation and Divorce under English and Ecclesiastical Law:_x000D_ The Early Christian Doctrine and the Theory of the Canon Law_x000D_ The Protestant Doctrine of Divorce_x000D_ Law and Theory during Three Centuries_x000D_ Matrimonial Institutions in the United States:_x000D_ Obligatory Civil Marriage in the New England Colonies_x000D_ Ecclesiastical Rites and the Rise of Civil Marriage in the Southern Colonies_x000D_ Optional Civil or Ecclesiastical Marriage in the Middle Colonies_x000D_ Divorce in the American Colonies_x000D_ A Century and a Quarter of Marriage Legislation in the United States, 1776-1903_x000D_ Volume 3:_x000D_ A Century and a Quarter of Divorce Legislation in the United States:_x000D_ The New England States_x000D_ The Southern and Southwestern States_x000D_ The Middle and the Western States_x000D_ Problems of Marriage and the Family:_x000D_ The Function of Legislation_x000D_ The Function of Education...

Book International Institutions in World History

Download or read book International Institutions in World History written by Laust Schouenborg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of IR has always suffered from a parochial occupation with the state and the Western system of states. This book presents a case for a basic reorientation of IR away from the state and towards the study of social institutions in the sense of patterned practices, ideas and norms/rules. The argument is that the state is an inherently modern phenomenon, a modern social institution, and that foundational concepts in IR should be based on a full appreciation of the wider record of human existence on earth, trans-historically and cross-culturally. This book will interest scholars and students within IR (particularly IR theory), anthropology, archaeology and sociology.

Book A History of American Higher Education

Download or read book A History of American Higher Education written by John R. Thelin and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of American higher education—now up to date. Colleges and universities are among the most cherished—and controversial—institutions in the United States. In this updated edition of A History of American Higher Education, John R. Thelin offers welcome perspective on the triumphs and crises of this highly influential sector in American life. Exploring American higher education from its founding in the seventeenth century to its struggle to innovate and adapt in the first decades of the twenty-first century, Thelin demonstrates that the experience of going to college has been central to American life for generations of students and their families. Drawing from archival research, along with the pioneering scholarship of leading historians, Thelin raises profound questions about what colleges are—and what they should be. Covering issues of social class, race, gender, and ethnicity in each era and chapter, this new edition showcases a fresh concluding chapter that focuses on both the opportunities and problems American higher education has faced since 2010. The essay on sources has been revised to incorporate books and articles published over the past decade. The book also updates the discussion of perennial hot-button issues such as big-time sports programs, online learning, the debt crisis, the adjunct crisis, and the return of the culture wars and addresses current areas of contention, including the changing role of governing boards and the financial challenges posed by the economic downturn. Anyone studying the history of this institution in America must read Thelin's classic text, which has distinguished itself as the most wide-ranging and engaging account of the origins and evolution of America's institutions of higher learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new volume in the Elements series, Daniel D. Bradlow traces the history and development of international law and international financial institutions from 1918 to today, providing a detailed overview of the legal frameworks within which such institutions were established and operate, and which structure their relationships with their member states and their citizens. The book opens with the inter-war years, the Bretton Woods Conference, and background on the treaties establishing the IMF and the World Bank. It then discusses the Articles of Agreement of the IMF and the IBRD, providing information on their governance arrangements, mandates, and operating principles. The international legal status of these two international financial institutions, their international legal rights, responsibilities and obligations, and their privileges and immunities are also examined. In later chapters, the book explores how the structure, functions, and operations of the World Bank and IMF have evolved since their establishment and examines the regional development banks and the regional financial arrangements that were created after them. The book concludes by exploring the challenges that international financial institutions are currently facing, and the contributions that international law can make to help them successfully meet these challenges.

Book History in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Download or read book History in the Humanities and Social Sciences written by Richard Bourke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-22 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume explores the relationship between history and a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences: economics, political science, political theory, international relations, sociology, philosophy, law, literature and anthropology. The relevance of historical approaches within these disciplines has shifted over the centuries. Many of them, like law and economics, originally depended on self-consciously historical procedures. These included the marshalling of evidence from past experience, philological techniques and source criticism. Between the late nineteenth and the middle of the twentieth century, the influence of new methods of research, many indebted to models favoured by the natural sciences, such as statistical, analytical or empirical approaches, secured an expanding intellectual authority while the hegemony of historical methods declined in relative terms. In the aftermath of this change, the essays collected in History in the Humanities and Social Sciences reflect from a variety of angles on the relevance of historical concerns to representative disciplines as they are configured today.
