Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and General Description of New France, Vol. 4 of 6 They had as chief Kondiaronk, better known in our Relations under the name of the Rat, a man of ability, extremely brave, and the Indian of the highest merit that the French ever knew in Canada. It had cost Mr. De Denonville no little pains to draw him to our interests but he had miscalculated, if he thought to dispose of this new ally at his pleasure. The Rat having pledged his word to make active war on the Iroquois, started from Michillimackinac with a picked band of Hurons, bent on distinguishing himself by some brilliant achievement.2 He took Catarocouy on his road, and on arriving there learned that they were negotiating a settlement with the cantons; that the treaty was well advanced, and that the Governor General was expecting at Montreal ambassadors and hos tages in the name of the whole Iroquois nation. The commandant at Catarocouy added that the best thing he could do under such circumstances was to return home with his warriors, and that he would give boundless offence to Mr. De Denonville, if he committed the least hostility against the Iroquois. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and General Description of New France, Vol. 5 of 6 The Count de Erontenac having expressed his determination to penetrate with all his forces into the very heart of Loquois country, there were several opinions as to the course to be adopted to ensure the success of so desired an expedition, and from which nothing less was expected than the end of a war which had several times brought the colony to the verge of ruin, which prevented its progress, and by favor of which the English considerably increased their commerce and established themselves powerfully on the continent of North America. They did not agree even as to the time to be selected for undertaking it. Many wished to swoop down on the canton of Onondaga with all the forces of the colony during the winter, in order to have all leisure completely to destroy in a single campaign all the other cantons; but the Chevalier de Callieres was not of this opinion. He declared to the General that he could not find men enough to march in snow-shoes, carry and draw ammunition and stores so far, and storm a town in the very heart of the enemy's country, where the Iroquois could easily rally in a short time all their warriors, and so intrench themselves as to keep the French army at bay for a long time.
