Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Through the Grand Canyon: Being the Record of the Pioneer Exploration of the Colorado River in 1869-70 The Colorado River of the West is formed in southeastern Utah by the junction of the Grand and Green rivers. For hundreds of miles it flows through a series of profound chasms, in many places from 4,000 to 6,000 feet deep, and rising nearly vertically for a considerable distance above the water. These canons are from one to fifteen miles wide at the top. The most famous of them is the Marble-Grand canon (really continuous, although it goes under two names, the Marble and the Grand). Through this vast gorge the Colorado drops 2,330 feet in 283 miles, the current sometimes attaining a velocity of twenty-five miles an hour. The river itself varies in width from seventy-five feet to a quarter of a mile. In the narrowest places it has at times a depth of over 100 feet. Book How the Canyon Became Grand

Download or read book How the Canyon Became Grand written by Stephen J. Pyne and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dismissed by the first Spanish explorers as a wasteland, the Grand Canyon lay virtually unnoticed for three centuries until nineteenth- century America rediscovered it and seized it as a national emblem. This extraordinary work of intellectual and environmental history tells two tales of the Canyon: the discovery and exploration of the physical Canyon and the invention and evolution of the cultural Canyon--how we learned to endow it with mythic significance.Acclaimed historian Stephen Pyne examines the major shifts in Western attitudes toward nature, and recounts the achievements of explorers, geologists, artists, and writers, from John Wesley Powell to Wallace Stegner, and how they transformed the Canyon into a fixture of national identity. This groundbreaking book takes us on a completely original journey through the Canyon toward a new understanding of its niche in the American psyche, a journey that mirrors the making of the nation itself.

Book excerpt: The Grand Canyon has long inspired deep emotions and responses. For the Native Americans who lived there, the canyon was home, full of sacred meanings. For the first European settlers to see it, the canyon drove them to great exploration adventures and Wild West dreams of wealth. The canyon also held deep importance for America’s pioneer conservationists such as Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir, and Aldo Leopold, and it played a central role in the emerging environmental movement. The Grand Canyon became a microcosm of the history and evolving values of the National Park Service, long conflicted between encouraging tourism and protecting nature. Many vivid characters shaped the canyon’s past. Its largest story is one of cultural history and changing American visions of the land. Grand Canyon: A History of a Natural Wonder and National Park is a mixture of great storytelling, unlikely characters, and important ideas. The book will appeal to both general readers and scholars interested in seeking a broader understanding of the canyon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite having lost an arm in the Civil War, John Wesley Powell had one of the most extraordinary lives and careers of any American of the last half of the 19th century. His legacy and impact is felt today by all who love nature and exploration. In 1869, Powell recruited a small group of adventurers to run the Green and Colorado Rivers from Wyoming all the way through the unexplored Grand Canyon. It was an enormously perilous journey that is captured here in Powell's own words from his journal. Surviving terrifying rapids over and over, terrible heat and cold, the loss and near exhaustion of supplies, the voyagers nevertheless kept their humor and esprit, while cataloging scientific observations and their own awe at the astonishing beauty of the country. Before the end, four had left the expedition and the rest emerged as the first to scientifically explore one of America's great treasures. Book The Promise of the Grand Canyon

Download or read book The Promise of the Grand Canyon written by John F. Ross and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A convincing case for Powell’s legacy as a pioneering conservationist.”--The Wall Street Journal "A bold study of an eco-visionary at a watershed moment in US history."--Nature A timely, thrilling account of the explorer who dared to lead the first successful expedition down the Colorado through the Grand Canyon—and waged a bitterly-contested campaign for sustainability in the West. John Wesley Powell’s first descent of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869 counts among the most dramatic chapters in American exploration history. When the Canyon spit out the surviving members of the expedition—starving, battered, and nearly naked—they had accomplished what others thought impossible and finished the exploration of continental America that Lewis and Clark had begun almost 70 years before. With The Promise of the Grand Canyon, John F. Ross tells how that perilous expedition launched the one-armed Civil War hero on the path to becoming the nation’s foremost proponent of environmental sustainability and a powerful, if controversial, visionary for the development of the American West. So much of what he preached—most broadly about land and water stewardship—remains prophetically to the point today.
