Book History and Ethnology Classic Reprint

Download or read book History and Ethnology Classic Reprint written by W. H. R. Rivers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Ethnology IT is the aim of this essay to show the importance of ethnology, and especially of recent develop ments of that science, to history. During the last ten years there has been in progress, rudely hindered but not stopped by the war, a movement which has brought the two disciplines into much closer relationship than would have been possible under the conditions which guided the study of ethnology twenty or thirty years ago. At this more remote period anthropology - I use the term anthropology advisedly - was wholly under the dominance of a crude evolutionary standpoint. The aim of the anthropologist was to work out a scheme of human progress according to which language, social organisation, religion, and material arts had developed through the action of certain principles or laws. It was assumed that the manifold peoples of the earth represented stages in this process of evolution, and it was supposed that by the comparative study of the culture of these different peoples it would be possible to formulate the laws by which the process of evolu tion had been directed and governed. It was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Words and Places

Download or read book Words and Places written by Isaac Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Words and Places: Illustrations of History, Ethnology, and Geography In the lately published collection of Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association, Dr. Henry Bradley begins his essay on English place names by remarking that of the many thousand names on the Ordnance Map of England, some, like Newcastle and Blackwater, have an obvious meaning, and some, like Thames and Helvellyn, have not. "It is natural," he continues, "that curiosity with regard to these enigmatical names should be very widely felt, and the writers who have attempted to satisfy this curiosity are innumerable. Unfortunately nearly everything that has been written on the subject is worthless." But he excepts from this condemnation Canon Isaac Taylor's Names and their Histories, a companion volume to the present book. A yet later and yet more cautious scholar may even class these books as fiction, but whether as fiction or not he must applaud it. In all ages place names have been favourite beasts of the chase. They are noble game, and they have given marvellous sport. They continue to do so, and generation after generation they survive to fascinate and to elude us. Take, for example, the name of Icknield Street. It has long been connected with the tribe of the Iceni who held the land round about its north-eastern terminus, and not many years ago Dr. Edwin Guest, in his Origines Celticae, translated the ancient Icenhilde Weg as "the highway (or military way) of the Iceni." Archaeologists sprang up to show that the Iceni had given their name to several places upon its course. Ickleton was supposed to be Icenton; Icklingham was Iceningham; Ickleford was Icenford. But then appeared Professor Haverfield and Dr. Bradley. Professor Haverfield showed that the Icknield Way could not be satisfactorily traced in Norfolk and Suffolk, the country of the Iceni, and that there were places just as probably named after that tribe in Middlesex, Sussex, and Yorkshire. These places, he affirms, owe their names to English personal names like Icel and Icca. Finally he says: "Nor could either the real name Icenhilde, or the supposed names Iceningham and the like, have grown out of the name Iceni. Book The History of Ethnological Theory Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Ethnological Theory Classic Reprint written by Robert Harry Lowie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ethnological Theory The present treatise is explicitly devoted only to that part of anthropology (as the term is understood in English-speaking countries) which concerns culture. Within that sphere it attempts to indicate the course of theoretical progress; but since theory must rest on fact, the growth of knowledge through the perfection of tech niques for gathering information receives proper con sideration. A glance at the Table of Contents suffices to show that there has been no undue emphasis on American theories; indeed, Morgan and Boas are the only writers to whom extended discussion has been granted. On the other hand, in illustrating points by special instances, the author has inevitably leaned heavily on American material, with which he happens to be most familiar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Material on the History and Ethnology of the Caddo Indians When I undertook to assemble materials from the original sources bearing on the tribes of the lower Mississippi, the Caddo were not included, partly because they did not reach the Mississippi and partly because consideration of them was believed to involve a study of the stock to which they belonged, and work was at that time being conducted in it by Dr. George A. At any rate it does not mean that I hold them to be the centre of our civilization. Still less does it imply that they are the cradle of the human race. NO hypothesis attaches to them. Download or read book Ethnology of the Yuchi Indians Classic Reprint written by Frank G. Speck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethnology of the Yuchi Indians In the summers of 1904 and 1905 I spent a total of about four months among the Yuchi Indians of the Creek nation in Oklahoma collecting material for the Bureau of American Ethnology. The investigation was undertaken at the recommendation of Dr. Franz Boas of Columbia University. Funds to cover transportation and the collection of ethnological specimens were furnished by the American Museum of Natural History upon both occasions under Dr. Boas's recommendation. The greater part of the ethnological material offered in this paper was obtained at the same time, and is published with the permission of both the scientific institutions concerned. Again during the winter of 1908 while holding a Harrison fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, I was able under special provision of the Provost to make a third visit to the Yuchi for the purpose of completing my observa tions, and the studies which are embodied in the present work took their final form during this period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Folk: Studies in Comparative Ethnology Intelligence everywhere is the same thing, but its developments are successive; slowly, step by step, humanity gravitates towards reason. Sooner or later it will be acknowledged that ideas bear the stamp of their own age, that feelings vary in form and in degree. Future science will classify conceptions, even the most whimsical, will state how preposterous fancies have taken shape, will put a date upon prejudices and superstitions as upon a sort of fossils. Such has been the leading thought in this book. Let me now explain the method followed and the means employed. The task set before me was to trace faithful portraits, neither caricatured nor embellished. And yet I am forced to recognise that they leave a somewhat more favourable impression than would result from daily companionship with the originals. It could scarcely be otherwise.
