Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of Springfield, Missouri, population 1,500—and the epic struggle between the Union and Confederacy to control it. During the Civil War, Springfield was a frontier community of about 1,500 people, but it was the largest and most important place in southwest Missouri. The Northern and Southern armies vied throughout the early part of the war to occupy its strategic position. The Federal defeat at Wilson’s Creek in August of 1861 gave the Southern forces possession, but Zagonyi’s charge two and half months later returned Springfield to the Union. The Confederacy came back near Christmas of 1861—before being ousted again in February of 1862. Marmaduke’s defeat at the Battle of Springfield in January of 1863 ended the contest, placing the Union firmly in control, but Springfield continued to pulse with activity throughout the war. In this volume, historian Larry Wood chronicles this epic story. Includes illustrations

  • ISBN : 1610754565
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book White Man s Heaven written by Kimberly Harper and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on court records, newspaper accounts, penitentiary records, letters, and diaries, White Man’s Heaven is a thorough investigation into the lynching and expulsion of African Americans in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Kimberly Harper explores events in the towns of Monett, Pierce City, Joplin, and Springfield, Missouri, and Harrison, Arkansas, to show how post–Civil War vigilantism, an established tradition of extralegal violence, and the rapid political, economic, and social change of the New South era happened independently but were also part of a larger, interconnected regional experience. Even though some whites, especially in Joplin and Springfield, tried to stop the violence and bring the lynchers to justice, many African Americans fled the Ozarks, leaving only a resilient few behind and forever changing the racial composition of the region.

Book The Ozarks in Missouri History

Download or read book The Ozarks in Missouri History written by Lynn Morrow and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2013-12-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in scholarly study of the Ozarks has grown steadily in recent years, and The Ozarks in Missouri History: Discoveries in an American Region will be welcomed by historians and Ozark enthusiasts alike. This lively collection gathers fifteen essays, many of them pioneering efforts in the field, that originally appeared in the Missouri Historical Review, the journal of the State Historical Society. In his introduction, editor Lynn Morrow gives the reader background on the interest in and the study of the Ozarks. The scope of the collection reflects the diversity of the region. Micro-studies by such well-known contributors as John Bradbury, Roger Grant, Gary Kremer, Stephen Limbaugh Sr., and Milton Rafferty explore the history, culture, and geography of this unique region. They trace the evolution of the Ozarks, examine the sometimes-conflicting influences exerted by St. Louis and Kansas City, and consider the sometimes highly charged struggle by federal, state, and local governments to define conservation and the future of Current River.

Book Biographical Register of the Confederate Congress

Download or read book Biographical Register of the Confederate Congress written by Ezra J. Warner, Jr. and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1975-09-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeled after Ezra J. Warner's two earlier books, Generals in Gray and Generals in Blue, the volume contains an introduction describing the makeup of the Confederate Congress, biographical sketches of the congressmen, and a substantial bibliography. Each biographical sketch includes the place and date of birth, family background, education, means of livelihood, politics, public service record, and degree of financial and political success of each congressman by 1860. The authors describe each individual's participation in (or his opposition to) secession and detail the circumstances of his election to the Confederate Congress. A prominent section of each sketch is devoted to each man's activities in the Congress: his position on the major issues before Congress, his chief interest and the measures he sponsored, and the reason he left the Congress. Then, the authors attempt to pick up the lives of each congressman after the Civil War. The sketches include the place and date of death of each man, as well as the place of burial. Anyone interested in Civil War history will find Biographical Register of the Confederate Congress an indispensable reference.
