Book Glasshouses and Glass Manufacturers of the Pittsburgh Region

Download or read book Glasshouses and Glass Manufacturers of the Pittsburgh Region written by Jay W. Hawkins and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pittsburgh region, while well known for steelmaking, was likewise an important glass manufacturing center in this country's history. This book provides detailed accounts of the region's glassmakers from the first factory dating to 1795 through 1910. Glassmaking started out modestly with small glasshouses in Pittsburgh and up the Monongahela River in New Geneva during the final few years of the 18th century. By the close of the 19th century, the Pittsburgh region was producing more than half of all domestic window glass and the lion's share of most other forms of glass in the United States. The original purpose of this manuscript was to assemble and record as accurately as possible the history of all of the glassworks and the glass manufacturers that operated them in Pittsburgh and the immediate surrounding region. This book was designed to be a reference guide for anyone who is interested in the history of glass in western Pennsylvania. The years companies were operating, where the glassworks were located, what types of glass and specific glass items did they make, and what marks did they use is just some of the information that can be found in this book. There are hundreds of individual companies and name changes listed in this volume. It contains as much information about each company that could practically be included. Even the most minor name or address change was recorded exactly as noted by contemporary sources. As much as possible, contemporary reference sources, such as city directories, early newspapers, maps, and journals were used to provide accurate and complete histories of the glasshouses. Generally, the better-known companies will have much more of their history available. However, every known glassmaker and glasshouse was included, regardless of how little information about them could be found. This book is intended to aid researchers in the determination of the age and the origin of marked pieces as well as narrowing down potential manufacturers of unmarked objects. The liberal reproduction of original advertisements and maps as well as the photographs of glass marks were included to complement and augment the narrative. The format of this book was established to facilitate its use as a reference guide.

Book Reflections of a Glass Maker

Download or read book Reflections of a Glass Maker written by Alan Slavich and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-04-28 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections of a Glass Maker is a unique look into the history and transition of the flat glass industry in the United States as told by an insider. Flat glass is a vital part of our lives, as it provides protection from the elements and views of the world. The making of flat glass is an ancient process but has been a mystery to most of civilization since it was first invented. The evolution of flat glass processes is covered in this book. The latest evolution in flat glass production is a remarkable new invention called the float glass process that was invented in the 1950s by the Pilkington company in England. The amazing float glass process was introduced into the United States in 1963. This new process completely transformed the flat glass industry forever. The invention of float glass allowed much higher production levels with increasingly higher quality of the finished product. The author began his career in the float glass industry in 1963 and retired after fifty-five years in the industry. He entered the industry at such a unique time and was able to watch as the very old flat glass processes were replaced by the new revolutionary float glass process. He relates experiences with three different companies that utilize the float glass process. He shares some technical data and history of the flat glass industry as well as some humorous instances that occurred along the way. The book gives the reader a comprehensive look at an industry about which most people simply know very little.

This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the history of Glass Industry Development in America since Columbus. "The progress of the glass industry in America has been far from constant. It has suffered severe and violent fluctuations, amounting almost to annihilation. Several times it has needed to be born again. But the sum total of these successes and vicissitudes has been the establishment of an industry which, while it is the oldest, is also at the present time one of the most promising and most highly developed of all our industries. To understand its rise and progress, one must be familiar with the elements which go to make it up. Four things are needed to make glass: crude materials; refractory substances for crucibles and furnaces; suitable fuel, and intelligent labor. To make glass commercially, a fifth factor is all important, and that is an accessible market. The history of the industry has consisted in the various possible interchanges between these elements. They are far from permanent..."
