Book Sociolinguistics Soziolinguistik Volume 1

Download or read book Sociolinguistics Soziolinguistik Volume 1 written by Ulrich Ammon and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of the handbook Sociolinguistics/Soziolinguistik , the then young discipline has changed and developed considerably. The field has left behind its status as an interdiscipline between sociology and linguistics and is now a worldwide established field. Sociolinguistics continues to contribute to solving practical problems in areas such as language planning and standardization, language policy, as well as in language didactics and speech therapy. Moreover, new topics and areas of application have arisen from the autonomy of the discipline - these have been systematically and extensively included in the second edition of the handbook. The new overall concept depicts the regional and disciplinary representativity of sociolinguistic research while offering an encyclopedia-like useablitiy for all its readers. This includes theoretical depth and stringency for readers interested in theory, as well as methodical abundance and detail for empirical researchers. The descriptions of methods are so informative and precise that they can directly be used in the preparation of project planning. Similarly, the descriptions in the practice-oriented articles are so precise that users can accurately assess to what extent they can expect a certain sociolinguistic approach to help solve their problems. With an extensive description as its goal, the second edition of the handbook Sociolinguistics/Soziolinguistik takes into account the current standing of the discipline and the modified structure of the field.

Book Geschichte und Typologie der Sprachsysteme

Download or read book Geschichte und Typologie der Sprachsysteme written by Michail L. Kotin and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2011 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. / The articles in the present volume deal with issues which have attracted considerable attention in modern linguistics, but which have frequently been treated in isolation from one another, namely the typology of languages, linguistic change, contrastive synchronic and diachronic morphology, syntax and semantics, and corpus-based studies of present-day and older languages. Their central concern was to evaluate empirical findings to construct theories grounded in typological universals and to test hypotheses which had initially been formulated on the basis of deduction against data gained from corpora of contemporary and historical languages.

Book The German Language in America 1683 1991

Download or read book The German Language in America 1683 1991 written by Joe Salmons and published by Max Kade Institute. This book was released on 1993 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents seventeen articles, revised and expanded from a Max Kade Symposium, on the German language in North America. It includes historical studies (colonial German in contrast with Native American languages, the language of Pietism among colonial immigrants), dialect descriptions (Donau-schwäbisch in the Midwest, Low German in Kansas, Volga German in Kansas) and investigations into the impact of German on English (German ethnic varieties of English, German in advertising, German loanwords in American English). Research on language maintenance and shift is especially well-represented, with a general theoretical contribution and case studies of Alberta, Black Sea Germans in the Dakotas, and the Amana colonies. Methodological and theoretical issues include case loss and morphosyntactic change (East Franconian in Indiana), a comparative study of German in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, as well as several papers on Pennsylvania German, treating linguistic convergence, language attitudes, and sociolingusitic variation.

Book Linguistic Purism in the Germanic Languages

Download or read book Linguistic Purism in the Germanic Languages written by Nils Langer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purism is an aspect of linguistic study which appeals not only to the scholar but also to the layperson. Somehow, ordinary speakers with many different mother tongues and with no formal training in linguistics share certain beliefs about what language is, how it develops or should develop, whether it has good or bad qualities, etc. The topic of linguistic purism in its many realisations is the subject of this volume of 19 articles selected from the contributions presented at a conference at the University of Bristol in 2003. In particular, the articles deal with the relationship of purism to historical prescriptivism, e.g. the influence of grammarians in the 17th and 18th centuries, to nationhood, e.g. the instrumentalising of purism in the standardisation of Afrikaans or Luxembourgish, to modern society, e.g. the existence of puristic tendencies in computer chatrooms, to folk linguistics, e.g. lay perceptions of different varieties of English, and to academic linguistics, e.g. the presence of puristic notions in the historiography of German or English.
