Parmi eux, on compte de nombreux sportifs professionnels et de haut niveau. Longtemps, la santé bucco-dentaire a été oubliée dans la médecine sportive. Le sport peut en effet avoir un impact sur la santé bucco-dentaire comme les traumatismes mais l'inverse est aussi vrai. En effet d'après une étude réalisée à l'INSEP, parmi les athlètes de haut niveau, plus d'un sportif sur sept attribuait une contre-performance à un problème bucco-dentaire. Sachant donc que de nombreuses contre-performances peuvent être d'origine bucco-dentaire, il semble nécessaire que ces sportifs soient suivis par un chirurgien-dentiste. En effet, un sportif qui s'entraîne en vue d'une compétition quelle qu'elle soit ne peut négliger le fait qu'un problème dentaire soit à l'origine d'une mauvaise performance. Depuis la création de la Société Française d'Odonto-Stomatologie du sport en 1978, le chirurgien-dentiste occupe au sein de la médecine du sport une place de plus en plus prépondérante. En effet de nombreuses équipes ou fédérations disposent de leur propre chirurgien-dentiste. Par exemple, l'INSEP possède un cabinet dentaire depuis 1998 qui emploie quatre dentistes. Cette thèse permet d'étudier cette relation entre santé bucco-dentaire et performance sportive. Nous évaluerons la santé bucco-dentaire des sportifs de haut niveau et son impact sur leurs performances.
