Book The Reception and Interpretation of the Bible in Late Antiquity

Download or read book The Reception and Interpretation of the Bible in Late Antiquity written by Lorenzo DiTommaso and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a Festschrift offered to Charles Kannengiesser on the occasion of his 80th birthday and honours him for his numerous scholarly accomplishments. Its twenty-five contributions discuss some of the major issues pertaining to the reception and interpretation of the Bible in late antique Christianity and Judaism. They focus on the ways in which communities and individuals understood the Bible and interpreted its traditions to address their historical, social, and theological requirements. Since the Bible was by far the most important book during these centuries, a discussion of its influence in such contexts will illuminate significant aspects of the formation of western civilisation.

Book The Soul and Spirit of Scripture within Origen s Exegesis

Download or read book The Soul and Spirit of Scripture within Origen s Exegesis written by Elizabeth Dively Lauro and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Ann Dively Lauro discusses the theologian Origen’s employment of three distinct senses of scriptural meaning within his exegetical theory and practice: somatic (bodily, factually historical), psychic (pertaining to the soul, a figurative call to shun vice and grow in virtue), and pneumatic (spiritual, revealing God’s plan of salvation through Christ’s Incarnation). Lauro first establishes that a correct understanding of the mechanics of Origen’s exegesis is vital to an informed reading of his works, then cites Origen’s theoretical foundations for each sense. She ultimately demonstrates how the relationship between the two “higher senses” (psychic and pneumatic) is central to Origen’s exegetical efforts and facilitates his audience’s spiritual transformation.

Download or read book A Divided Republic written by Emile Chabal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an original and sophisticated historical interpretation of contemporary French political culture. Until now, there have been few attempts to understand the political consequences of the profound geopolitical, intellectual and economic changes that France has undergone since the 1970s. However, Emile Chabal's detailed study shows how passionate debates over citizenship, immigration, colonial memory, the reform of the state and the historiography of modern France have galvanised the French elite and created new spaces for discussion and disagreement. Many of these debates have coalesced around two political languages - republicanism and liberalism - both of which structure the historical imagination and the symbolic vocabulary of French political actors. The tension between these two political languages has become the central battleground of contemporary French politics. It is around these two poles that politicians, intellectuals and members of France's vast civil society have tried to negotiate the formidable challenges of ideological uncertainty and a renewed sense of global insecurity.

Download or read book Salvation in Henri de Lubac written by Eugene R. Schlesinger and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2023-07-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a compelling account of the major works of Henri de Lubac, one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century, and argues that soteriology provides a lens through which their inner unity can be discerned. The writings of Henri de Lubac have left an indelible mark on Catholic theology, preparing the ground for, giving shape to, and explaining the seminal event of twentieth-century Catholicism: the Second Vatican Council. Like the Council itself, though, de Lubac remains a contested figure, difficult to classify. Salvation in Henri de Lubac presents an overview of de Lubac’s major works in light of his own statements that a mystical vision animated them all. De Lubac’s mystical theology hinges upon a vision of salvation, understood as humanity’s incorporation into the triune God through the cross and resurrection of the incarnate Christ. From his writings on the supernatural and theological epistemology, to his treatments of the spiritual interpretation of Scripture, ecclesiology, sacramental theology, and the theology of history, the mystery of the cross looms large, gathering these disparate topics into one focal center while also allowing their distinct contours to remain. By attending to de Lubac’s work in this light, Eugene R. Schlesinger brings important themes from French language scholarship into the English-speaking conversation and clarifies the nature of de Lubac’s ressourcement. It is not a method, nor a sensibility, but the outgrowth of a conviction: in the mystery of Christ a definitive and unsurpassable gift has been given, one that constitutes the meaning of the world and its history, one whose riches can never be exhausted. Schlesinger claims that unless we understand de Lubac and his work in light of his own motivations and emphases, we risk distorting his contribution, reducing him to a proxy in the struggle for post-conciliar Catholic self-definition.

Book Napoleon III and Europe

Download or read book Napoleon III and Europe written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon III and Europe investigates, outside the field of France's own political development, those positive changes in the organization of Europe and the world which Napoleon III effected. It examines Napoleon III's attitude towards the so-called nationality principle with regards to the Balkans, and the attention he gave to the fate of the Christian nations in European Turkey. Napoleon's role in the unification of Italy is also discussed. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with an analysis of Napoleon's Balkan policy in relation to the Ottoman Empire, as well as his attitude towards the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The two areas of Europe in which the problem of nationality was most acute and complex are considered, namely, the empires of the Hapsburgs and the Turks. Attention then turns to Napoleon's policy towards Italy and its unification. The process of Italian unification is discussed in relation to European politics during Napoleon III's reign. Napoleon's foreign policy on Europe and the diplomatic actions of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck are also examined, along with his contributions to the development of European politics and culture. The final chapter is a selective bibliography of Europe between 1852 and 1890. This monograph will appeal to historians and political scientists.

Book excerpt: An international array of authors, including some prominent extreme athletes like Jake Burton and Arlo Eisenberg, look at a variety of issues and concerns within the new action extreme sports that are gaining popularity throughout the world. For each sport, an interpretation is presented through two essays: one written by a scholar active in some aspect of research for the given activity, and another by a practitioner/athlete who writes "from the inside out." The juxtaposed essays confront questions about the essence of sport such as, What is sport?; How does it originate?; and What is its use, value, and function? This book offers a fascinating look at how twentieth- and twenty-first-century sport forms emerge, proliferate, and take hold in a sport-crazy world.

At a moment when time and concepts ,and political concepts in particular, are no longer obvious and taken for granted but have themselves become historical matter, this book does not limit itself to an updating of the state of the art; it also offers very useful lessons for the development of future research into this field.
