Book excerpt: From pre-colonial times through World War II , the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has served as a stage for the dramatic evolution of American history. Dispossessed citizens from the Massachusetts Bay Colony came to Portsmouth in the spirit of religious and political tolerance, paving the way for the establishment of a large Quaker settlement in town. Revolutionary leaders such as George Washington, Lafayette, and Rochambeau visited the summer residences of wealthy Newport merchants in Portsmouth, including the home of Tory, Metcalf Bowler. During the Civil War, the Melville area of Portsmouth was the site of a hospital for wounded Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners, and was an active stop on the Underground Railroad. Prior to World War II , John F. Kennedy received his PT boat training in Portsmouth, and Raytheon has kept many employed in the defense industry ever since.

This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhode Island Historical Tracts, No. 14 Some years since, in studying Robert. Bay1ie's Dzswaswe From t/ze Errours of t/ze T z'me, I came upon three citations which he credits to Williams, Of the name Heathen; and since that time have diligently searched in every probable locality within reach for such a book; putting it last year, under this guessed title, into my Bib liographical Collections, in the hope of so calling attention to, and finding, it. Almost my first opening of the Catalogue of the library of the British Museum the last winter was to Williams's name, trust ing that, since former searches there, the missing treatise might have been added to their shelves by purchase, or exhumed from some as yet not fully assorted and described riches of the past. My endeavor was vain. But 26 Marchlast, having occasion there to consult R. Fage's Lawfulnesse of Infants Baptz'rme, that treatise, whose press mark is [e. 1189. (io)] came to my desk bringing with it, among the eight or ten pamphlets which had been bound. Together to construct the volume, the long-sought tract [e. 1189. By some accident it had remained uncatalogued, and unknown to the authorities as being in their possession. I copied it with literal exactness; have had it reprinted page by page and line by line, in all its glory of misprint and have procured the minute comparison of the proofs with the original by one of the experts of the Museum. 80 that - while making no claim to such pictorial accuracy as photo-lithography would secure - this edition of it is confidently offered to the few who will take an interest in it, as being, to all intents and purposes, the same thing as the original in their hand. I have added a few foot-notes to clear up some of the worst cases of obscurity caused by the printer's-carelessness, and probable want of authorial super vision. Book Hidden History of Rhode Island and the Civil War

Download or read book Hidden History of Rhode Island and the Civil War written by Frank L Grzyb and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The smallest state to defend the Union and one far from the battlefront, Rhode Island's stories of the Civil War are often overlooked. From Brown University's John M. Hay, later to become Lincoln's assistant secretary, to the city of Newport's role as the temporary headquarters for the U.S. Naval Academy, the Civil War history of the Ocean State is a fascinating if little-known tale. Few know that John Wilkes Booth visited Newport to meet his supposed fiancee just nine days before he assassinated President Lincoln. The state also contributed several high-ranking officers to the Union effort and, more surprisingly, two prominent officers to the Confederacy. Remarkably, Kady Southwell Brownell also openly served as a soldier in a Rhode Island infantry regiment. Join author Frank L. Grzyb as he investigates Rhode Island's rich Civil War history and unearths century-old stories that have since faded into obscurity.

Book Catholicism and Historical Narrative

Download or read book Catholicism and Historical Narrative written by Kevin Schmiesing and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories about the past shape not only the way people think about history, but also the way they act in the present. Nowhere is this truer than in the area of religion, which has been and continues to be a powerful motivating force in the lives of billions around the globe. In this volume, Catholicism and Historical Narrative: A Catholic Engagement with Historical Scholarship, contributors explore the way stories are constructed and show how a focus on Catholic figures and concerns challenges common understandings of important historical episodes and eras. Editor Kevin Schmiesing has gathered a distinguished group of scholars who, in various ways, call into question conventional story lines by highlighting previously neglected Catholic ideas and individuals. Built on ample evidence and employing keen insight, each essay is the result of cutting-edge research in fields ranging from historical research on Puritan New England and the antebellum South to the history of abortion to the twentieth-century papacy. Students and scholars of religious history, Catholic historians, and anyone interested in the intersection of religion and history will all find here much to interest—and maybe even surprise—in the chapters' arguments concerning the deficiencies of history's dominant narratives. The volume's focus on the history of Catholics in the United States makes it essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the place of Catholicism in the American story.

Book Rhode Island s Civil War Hospital

Download or read book Rhode Island s Civil War Hospital written by Frank L. Grzyb and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, thousands of wounded Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners convalesced in a general army hospital in rural Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island. Because of its location on the periphery of the action, the hospital has remained a footnote to the dramatic sweep of Civil War literature. However, its history and the experiences of the doctors, nurses, patients and guards that gave it life provide a new perspective on the interaction between the army and society in wartime and on life in Civil War America. This in-depth account also explores the barbarities of medicine, daily routine in a general army hospital, the role of citizens in providing aid, the later adventures of former patients and staff, and the final resting places of those who died on the grounds.
