Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales the Romance of Reality, Vol. 13 of 15 Geoffrey of Monmouth, the famous chronicler of legendary British history, tells us, - in reference to the time when the Celtic kings of Britain were struggling against the Saxon invaders, - that "there appeared a star of wonderful magnitude and brightness, darting its rays, at the end of which was a globe of fire in the form of a dragon, out of whose mouth issued two rays; one of which seemed to stretch itself beyond the extent of Gaul, the other towards the Irish Sea, and ended in two lesser rays." He proceeds to say, that Merlin, the magician, being called on to explain this portent, declared that the dragon represented Uther, the brother of King Ambrose, who was destined himself soon to become king; that the ray extending towards Gaul indicated a great son, who should conquer the Gallic Kingdoms; and that the ray with two lesser rays indicated a daughter, whose son and grandson should successively reign over Britain. Uther, in consequence, when he came to the throne, had two gold dragons made, one of which he placed in the cathedral of Winchester, which it brightly illuminated; the other he kept, and from it gained the name of Pendragon. The powerful ray represented his great son Arthur, destined to become the flower of chivalry, and the favorite hero of mediaeval romance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales, Vol. 4: The Romance of Reality One day, in the far-off sixth century, a youthful deacon of the Roman Church walked into the slave-market of Rome, situated at one extremity of the ancient Forum. Gregory, his name; his origin from an ancient noble family, whose genealogy could be traced back to the days of the early Caesars. A youth was this of imperial powers of mind, one who, had he lived when Rome was mistress of the physical world, might have become emperor; but who, living when Rome had risen to lordship over the spiritual world, became pope, - the famous Gregory the Great. In the Forum the young deacon saw that which touched his sympathetic soul. Here cattle were being sold; there, men. His eyes were specially attracted by a group of youthful slaves, of aspect such as he had never seen before. They were bright of complexion, their hair long and golden, their expression of touching innocence. Their fair faces were strangely unlike the embrowned complexions to which he had been accustomed, and he stood looking at them in admiration, while the slave-dealers extolled their beauty of face and figure. "From what country do these young men come?" asked Gregory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales: The Romance of Reality IT has become a commonplace remark that fact is often stranger than fiction. It may be said, as a variant of this, that history is often more romantic than romance. The pages Of the record of man's doings are frequently illustrated by entertaining and striking incidents, relief points in the dull mo notony of every-day events, stories fitted to rouse the reader from languid weariness and stir anew in his veins the pulse of interest in human life. There are many such, - dramas on the stage of history, life scenes that are pictures in action, tales pathetic, stirring, enlivening, full of the element of the un usual, of the stuff the novel and the romance are made of, yet with the advantage of being actual fact. Incidents of this kind have proved as attractive to writers as to readers. They have dwelt upon them lovingly, embellished them with the charms of rhet oric and occasionally with the inventions of fancy, until what began as fact has Often entered far into. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romance and Reality, Vol. 1 of 2 Her father had been the youngest brother, and, like many other younger brothers, both unnecessary and imprudent; a captain in a dragoon regiment, who spent his allowance on his person, and his pay on his horse. He was the last man in the world who ought to have fallen in love, excepting with an heiress, yet he married suddenly and secretly the pretty and portionless Emily Delawarr, and wrote home to ask pardon and cash. The former was withheld on account of the latter, till his elder brother's unexceptionable marriage with Miss Belgrave, and her estate, gave him an interest in the family which he forthwith exerted in favor of Captain Arundel. But a few short years, and the young oflicer died in battle, and his u idow only survived to place their orphan girl in Mr. And Mrs. Arundel's care, to whom Emily had ever been even as their own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romance and Reality, Vol. 3 of 3 Edward paced the room mournfully: he gazed on the slight remains of taste which had turned wealth to beauty. But the most touching part of all, was to mark the effort that had been made to restore something Of comfort and appearance. He thought of the beautiful face he had seen for a moment - it looked yery young to have known much Of suffering. The door Of the room opened, and the negro appeared, bringing in supper; and the little table was soon spread. There was a flask of light wine, a melon, some bread, and fried fish. And with all the volubility Of his race, Caesar explained, that the ladies sent their excuses, and that to-morrow they hoped to make him personally welcome.
