The captain, as he saw her appear, gave her kindly greeting. Troubles all over now, I take it, mistress. We have had a sore tossing, but beshrew me if you have not stood it like the toughest old tar afloat! If it had not been for the poor young gentleman below, I trow you would have been on deck with the rest of us ever since we left port! How is he now, lady? And is there aught he is wanting? Can't you get him up on deck in this beautiful sunshine? We shall be lying here till to-morrow, and there's no more motion than the rocking of a cradle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scribner Treasury: 22 Classics Tales Shortly after Madame Delphine appeared in 1881, Laf cadio Hearn commented on Cable's genius for recreation of a past era: The author must have made many a pil grimage to study the wrinkled faces of the houses, or perhaps to read the queer names upon the signs - as Balzac loved to do in old-fashioned Paris. Hearn here put his finger on the two factors which in uenced Cable's writing in the greatest degree; French literary models and an antiquarian bent. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Tales and Other Stories And the Shilling rattled and jumped for joy as it was thrust back into the purse. So here it lay among strange companions, who came and went, each making room for a successor but the Shilling from home always remained in the bag which was a distinction for it. Several weeks had gone by, and the Shilling had travelled far out into the world without exactly knowing where he was, though he learned from the other coins that they were French or Italian. One said they were in such and such a town, another that they had reached such and such a spot; but the Shilling could form no idea of all this. He who has his head in a bag sees nothing; and this was the case with the Shilling. But one day, as he lay there, he noticed that the purse was not shut, and so he crept forward to the opening, to take a look around. He ought not to have done so; but he was inquisitive, and people Often have to pay for that. He slipped out into the fob: and when the purse was taken out at night the Shilling remained behind, and was sent out into the passage with the clothes. There he fell upon the floor: no one heard it, no one saw it. Next morning the clothes were carried back into the room; the gentleman put them on, and continued his journey, while the Shilling remained behind. The coin was found, and was required to go into ser vice again, so he was sent out with three other coins. It is a pleasant thing to look about one in the world, thought the Shilling, and to get to know strange people and foreign customs. And now began the history of the Shilling, as told by himself. Book Complete List of Historical Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book Complete List of Historical Stories Classic Reprint written by Gertrude Hand and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete List of Historical Stories In publishing these plays, I have in mind three general purposes by which I hope to show their value in the teaching of history in the primary grades of our schools. In the first place, by the use of the plays, the children become familiar with the important events of history without realizing that they are performing a difficult task. They find a pleasure in representing the different characters and enter into the important happenings of the life of a character in such a manner that the events are permanently fixed in their minds. Columbus or any other character is, for the time being, a person living among them. They hear his voice and in their imaginations follow his career step by step, feeling his disappointments and enjoying the success with him. They are brought to see the past and to act out its life in such a manner that its characters become their heroes rather than persons about whom pages have been written to be learned. As they advance through the grades, the characters seem to draw them toward a book so that they may know more about their lives. Instead of giving the pupils page after page for a lesson, we will then find them eager to learn all they can about a character and the events which brought his career to worthy notice in history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From English History: For Children Such volumes resemble the charts in which navigators delineate the barren ranges of hills that form the leading features of a country, while the soft undulations of the fertile valleys, the verdant groves, flowery plains, and pleasant streams, are absent from the picture. It is the object of the present work to offer to the Young a series of moral and instructive tales, each founded on some striking authentic fact in the annals of English History, in which royal or distinguished children were engaged; and in which it is the Author's wish to convey, in a pleasing form, useful and entertaining information illustrative of the manners, customs, and costume of the era connected with the events of every story; to which is also added, an Historical Summary, which the Author recommends to the attention of the juvenile reader, as containing many interesting particulars not generally to be met with in abridged histories. Book Hero Tales From American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hero Tales From American History Classic Reprint written by Henry Cabot Lodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Tales From American History After we had chosen our subjects we decided to prefix a motto, a fitting quotation, to each one of them. We were not unmindful of Addison's delightful essay on Mottoes and Signatures, which was itself prefaced by the familiar words Of Horace Ab ovo usque ad mala, or of the fact that a quotation from some Greek or Latin poet was at the beginning of each one of the Tatlers and Spectators. We were inclined to agree with Addison when he remarks: It was a saying of an ancient philosopher, that a good face is a letter of recommendation. It naturally makes the beholders inquisitive into the person who is the owner Of it, and generally prepossesses them in his favor. A handsome motto has the same effect. What influenced us still more I think was the fact that we were both habitual readers and genuine lovers of Scott and re joiced in the mottoes which he usually placed at the be ginning Of each chapter in his novels. In this exercise Scott had a peculiar charm, for apart from the ready fruits Of his wide reading, not only in accepted literature but in odd and out-of-the-way literary corners and by ways, whenever he was at a loss for an apt quotation he made one himself, attributing it to Old Play.
