Book Tablets from the Irisa rig Archive

Download or read book Tablets from the Irisa rig Archive written by Marcel Sigrist and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 1714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While each of the previously known archives from the Third Dynasty of Ur has provided distinct views of Sumerian society, those from Iri-Saĝrig present an extraordinary range of new sources, depicting a cosmopolitan Sumerian/Akkadian city unlike any other from this period. In this publication, Marcel Sigrist and Tohru Ozaki present more than two thousand newly identified tablets, mostly from Iri-Saĝrig. This unique and extensive corpus elucidates the importance that Iri-Saĝrig represented politically, militarily, and culturally in Sumer. Although these tablets were not able to be cleaned, baked, or photographed, the authors’ transliterations are based on the original tablets, often after repeated collations. Moreover, access to so many well-preserved tablets made it possible to improve upon the readings and interpretations offered in previous publications. Volume 1 contains a catalog and classification of the texts by provenance, a list of month names and year formulas, another of inscriptions, a chronological listing of the texts, and extensive indexes of personal names, deities, toponyms, and selected words and phrases. Volume 2 presents the texts in transliteration with substantial commentary. This two-volume publication preserves and makes available to the scholarly community a significant segment of Iraq’s cultural legacy that otherwise might have been ignored or even lost. It will augment and enhance our understanding of the unique civilization of Mesopotamia in the late third millennium BCE.

Book ANCIENT MYTHOLOGY Boxed Set Illustrated Edition

Download or read book ANCIENT MYTHOLOGY Boxed Set Illustrated Edition written by Lewis Spence and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 827 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ancient Near East is considered the cradle of civilization. Mesopotamia is a historical region of Western Asia situated within the Tigris–Euphrates river system. Babylonia was an Amorite state in lower Mesopotamia where an empire was created out of the territories of the former kingdoms of Sumer and Akkad. Assyria was a region on the Upper Tigris whose kings controlled a large kingdom at three different times in history, covering most of the Middle East. Ancient Egypt was a civilization of ancient North Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River. Around the 8th century BC the torch of civilization was taken from the Near East to ancient Greece and Rome. Both Greek and Roman societies flourished and wielded great influence throughout much of Europe, Northern Africa, and Western Asia. The rise of civilization corresponded with the institutional sponsorship of belief in gods, supernatural forces and the afterlife. Many civilizations adopted their own form of Polytheism and each of these nations developed their own mythologies which influenced the culture, arts, and literature of both Eastern and Western civilization. Book Persepolis Fortification Tablets

Download or read book Persepolis Fortification Tablets written by Richard Treadwell Hallock and published by Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. This book was released on 1969 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persepolis fortification texts in the Elamite language deal with administrative transfers of food commodities in the years 509-494 B.C., that is, in the thirteenth through the twenty-eighth year of Darius I. They apply to a rather large area which extended south at least to Niriz and north well into Elam, though it did not normally include Susa. The texts may be divided into two main groups: those which are concerned with large operations (movement of commodities from place to place, assignments for broad general purposes, and so on) and those which detail apportionments to the ultimate consumer.
