Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Survey of Speculative Philosophy Kant to Hegel: Designed as an Introduction to the Opinions of the Recent Schools The Author himself having stated at sufficient length in his Preface the object of the present work, the Translator does not feel it incumbent upon him to do more than observe that he has endeavoured throughout to remain faithful to his text; particular regard having being paid to the rendering of the metaphysical terms employed by the different writers, so that the unity of thought pervading their respective systems might be adequately preserved. If, however, despite his best efforts, obscurities of language should be found to exist, the Translator cannot take the burden of such wholly upon himself. It is well known to all students that difficulties of no ordinary kind have to be encountered in German Philosophy - difficulties not only of subject-matter, but of form, - in dealing with which as literal a translation as possible becomes oftentimes the last resource. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1854 edition. Excerpt: ...the essence of all religion, distinguishes itself from every other physical feeling of a relative dependence on those external objects which determine us; for, with reference to them, we still retain, at the same time, always a feeling of relative freedom, inasmuch as we are conscious of being able either to affect objects, and to allow them to affect us. or not. But we can claim nothing of this kind in our relation to the absolute; with reference to the latter we arc not capable of willing, i. e. of being self-active: it is both impossible and self-contradictory in any way to determine absolute existence, inasmuch as in itself it is pure existence, and entirely excludes determination; it is no more possible to will the absolute than to cognise it. On this subject we can only speak of entire dependence both with regard to ourselves and to all other objects, and that one applying to all in the same way and sense. The feeling of this dependence constitutes religion, with reference to the fundamental essence of which all men are equal to one another, differing only according to the degree in which the consciousness of God is alive in them. Hence there may be many systems of religion, and many theologies, according to the representations which men self-actively form to themselves, both of the absolute and of their relationship thereto; but that feeling constitutes in all these forms the proper religious element, being a reality essentially and vastly differing from every kind of theory, which can never constitute the essence of religion, as religion is not made up of mere thought or knowledge. If, from the consideration of the above subject, we turn next to that of human knowledge and of science in the proper sense of the term, we meet, on...

Book Multicultural Dynamics and the Ends of History

Download or read book Multicultural Dynamics and the Ends of History written by Real Fillion and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multicultural Dynamics and the Ends of History provides a strikingly original reading of key texts in the philosophy of history by Kant, Hegel, and Marx, as well as strong arguments for why these texts are still relevant to understanding history today. Réal Fillion offers a critical exposition of the theses of these three authors on the dynamics and the ends of history, in order to provide an answer to the question: "Where are we headed?" Grounding his answer in the twin observations that the world is becoming increasingly multicultural and increasingly unified, Fillion reasserts the task of the speculative philosophy of history as it had been understood by German philosophy: the articulation and understanding the historical process as a developmental whole. Fillion's interpretation engages many recent strands of social and political thought in order to provide a new understanding of current events, and possible futures, grounded in the understanding of the dynamics of the past and the present provided by Kant, Hegel, and Marx. The result is a rich and timely answer to the question of where our world is headed today.
