Download or read book Funding the Nation written by Michael Keyes and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel O'Connell created the Catholic nation in 1820s Ireland and in the process he gave birth to popular politics. Ahead of America where Andrew Jackson was creating his own brand of popular politics, O'Connell brought together rich and poor in support of a new phenomenon that became the popular political party. O'Connell began the shift in power from landed wealth to democratic nationalism. His success was built upon by Charles Stewart Parnell who created the first truly effective political party in the 1880s. The success of both O'Connell and Parnell was based on the flow of money into their organisations to sustain their political machines. Until now there has been no serious examination of how early nationalists raised money, how they accounted for it and – occasionally – how they misappropriated it. In telling this story Michael Keyes fills a key gap in our knowledge by showing us that popular funding was the life blood of Irish nationalism and was the key ingredient in a movement that went from political exclusion to political dominance in nineteenth-century Ireland.

Book Two Centuries of Irish History Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Two Centuries of Irish History Routledge Revivals written by R. Barry O'Brien and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers, first published in 1888, presents the history of Ireland as it unfolded from the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 until the Land Act of 1870 and the Home Rule Movement. Written at a time of great national interest in the ‘Irish Problem’, Two Centuries of Irish History tells the story of Ireland’s troubled relationship with successive British governments since the reign of William III, and charts the development of bitterness between opposing factions within Ireland itself. Whilst not lacking scholarly rigour, each contribution is lucidly written and accessible to the interested reader.

Book The Cambridge History of Ireland Volume 3 1730 1880

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Ireland Volume 3 1730 1880 written by James Kelly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was an era of continuity as well as change. Though properly portrayed as the era of 'Protestant Ascendancy' it embraces two phases - the eighteenth century when that ascendancy was at its peak; and the nineteenth century when the Protestant elite sustained a determined rear-guard defence in the face of the emergence of modern Catholic nationalism. Employing a chronology that is not bound by traditional datelines, this volume moves beyond the familiar political narrative to engage with the economy, society, population, emigration, religion, language, state formation, culture, art and architecture, and the Irish abroad. It provides new and original interpretations of a critical phase in the emergence of a modern Ireland that, while focused firmly on the island and its traditions, moves beyond the nationalist narrative of the twentieth century to provide a history of late early modern Ireland for the twenty-first century.

Book Organizing Democracy

Download or read book Organizing Democracy written by Henk te Velde and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the new types of political organization that emerged in Western Europe and the United States during the nineteenth century, from popular meetings to single-issue organizations and political parties. The development of these has often been used to demonstrate a movement towards democratic representation or political institutionalization. This volume challenges the idea that the development of ‘democracy’ is a story of rise and progress at all. It is rather a story of continuous but never completely satisfying attempts of interpreting the rule of the people. Taking the perspective of nineteenth-century organizers as its point of departure, this study shows that contemporaries hardly distinguished between petitioning, meeting and association. The attraction of organizing was that it promised representation, accountability and popular participation. Only in the twentieth century did parties reliable partners for the state in averting revolution, managing the unpredictable effects of universal suffrage, and reforming society. This collection analyzes them in their earliest stage, as just one of several types of civil society organizations, that did not differ that much from each other. The promise of organization, and the experiments that resulted from it, deeply impacted modern politics.
