Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Slavery, From the Earliest Periods Philosophy is the handmaid, and frequently the most successful expounder of the law. History is the ground work and only sure basis of philosophy. To understand aright, therefore, the Law of Slavery, we must not be ignorant of its history. A detailed and minute inquiry into the history of slavery would force us to trace the history of every na tion of the earth; for the most enlightened have, at some period within their existence, adopted it as-a sys tem; and no organized government has been so barbar ous as not to introduce it amongst its customs. It has been more universal than marriage, and more permanent than liberty.1 All that we can propose for ourselves here, is a limited and brief glance at its existence and condition during the several ages of the world. Book Sketches of Slave Life

Download or read book Sketches of Slave Life written by Peter Randolph and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sketches of Slave Life by Peter Randolph is a collection of Randolph's essays on the humanity of slaves as well as details of the everyday lives of slaves. Randolph writes with a passionate urgency that shows the perspective of abolitionists in the United States a decade before the 13th amendment. Excerpt: "The good Anti-Slavery men have very much to contend with, in their exertions for the cause of freedom. Many people will not believe their statements; call them unreasonable and fanatical. Some call them ignorant deceivers, who have never been out of their own homes and yet pretend to a knowledge of what is going on a thousand miles from them. Many call them dangerous members of society, sowing discord and distrust where there should be naught but peace and brotherly love. My Readers! give attention to the simple words of one who knows what he utters is truth; who is no stranger to the beauties of slavery or the generosity of the slaveholder. Spend a few moments reading his statement concerning the system of American slavery."

Excerpt: ... but a faint view of the cruel oppression to which the slaves are subject, but a strong one enough, it is thought, to fill every honest heart with a deep abhorrence of the atrocious system. Most of the important provisions here cited, though placed upder the name of only one state, prevail in nearly all the states, with slight variations in language, and some diversity in the penalties. The extracts have been made in part from Stroud's Sketch of the Slave Laws, but chiefly from authorized editions of the statute books referred to, found in the Philadelphia Law Library. As the compiler has not had access to many of the later enactments of the several states, nearly all he has cited are acts of an earlier date than that of the present anti-slavery movement, so that their severity cannot be ascribed to its influence. The cardinal principle of slavery, that the slave is not to be ranked among sentient beings, but among things--is an article of property, a chattel personal--obtains as undoubted law in all the slave states.* -- Stroud's Sketch, p. 22. The dominion of the master is as unlimited as is that which is tolerated by the laws of any civilized country in relation to brute animals--to quadrupeds; to use the words of the civL law. -- lb. 24. Slaves cannot even contract matrimony.f--i5. 61. LOUISIANA. -- A slave is one who is in the power of his master, to whom he belongs. The master may sell him, dispose of his person, his industry and his labor; he can do nothing, possess nothing, nor acquire anything, but what must belong to his master. --Civil Code, Art. 35. * In accordance with this doatrine, an act of Maryland, 1798, enumerates among articles of property, "slaves, working beasts, animals of any kind, stock, furniture, plate, and so...

Download or read book Many Thousands Gone written by Ira Berlin and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today most Americans, black and white, identify slavery with cotton, the deep South, and the African-American church. But at the beginning of the nineteenth century, after almost two hundred years of African-American life in mainland North America, few slaves grew cotton, lived in the deep South, or embraced Christianity. Many Thousands Gone traces the evolution of black society from the first arrivals in the early seventeenth century through the Revolution. In telling their story, Ira Berlin, a leading historian of southern and African-American life, reintegrates slaves into the history of the American working class and into the tapestry of our nation. Laboring as field hands on tobacco and rice plantations, as skilled artisans in port cities, or soldiers along the frontier, generation after generation of African Americans struggled to create a world of their own in circumstances not of their own making. In a panoramic view that stretches from the North to the Chesapeake Bay and Carolina lowcountry to the Mississippi Valley, Many Thousands Gone reveals the diverse forms that slavery and freedom assumed before cotton was king. We witness the transformation that occurred as the first generations of creole slaves--who worked alongside their owners, free blacks, and indentured whites--gave way to the plantation generations, whose back-breaking labor was the sole engine of their society and whose physical and linguistic isolation sustained African traditions on American soil. As the nature of the slaves' labor changed with place and time, so did the relationship between slave and master, and between slave and society. In this fresh and vivid interpretation, Berlin demonstrates that the meaning of slavery and of race itself was continually renegotiated and redefined, as the nation lurched toward political and economic independence and grappled with the Enlightenment ideals that had inspired its birth.
