This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Monmouth Presbytery and Its Churches But this new Presbytery scarcely has a history of its own. It may point to good work already done; but it is too soon even to attempt to set forth the fruits of this labor; and we would not sit in judgment upon ourselves. There seems, then, to be only one thing left for the historian to do, and that is to sketch the history of the individual churches composing the Presbytery. Please permit, then, first the statement of the great law of the Church's existence on earth, and then a glance at the history in illustration of this law. That law is growth. It is essential to the existence of religion in the soul that the believer shall grow in grace. It is essential to the existence of the Church on earth that she shall grow. This is not merely a truth that is common to all human organizations. It is of the very essence of religion that it be expansive, aggressive, progressive. It is a leaven hidden in a measure of meal - it must operate to leaven the whole mass. If it does not, there is no life in it. This is true of the indi vidual, and of the masses. You cannot fill up a church, and then, like a bottle of preserves, seal it up and set it away. The Church, considered either in its collective or individual capacity, must grow. And the most critical period for an individual church is when it is flourishing and full, She must find room for further growth, or decline will ensue. Download or read book The Duke of Monmouth Classic Reprint written by Gerald Griffin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke of Monmouth To the eye of the mountain-bred Scot, the display of fertility, of luxuriance, and of agricultural wealth, which the country soon presented far and near, had rather the character of a region of enchantment, such as he might have found in the gorgeous romances of the preceding century, than that of a soil made prolific by human hus bandry. The numerous sheep-pens in the fields on either side the road, the thick woods that clambered to the very summit of the neighbouring heights, the hep-gar dens, and extensive fields of grain that chequered the face of the surrounding lands; and diversity of scene through which the road conducted them, now Winding up a height overarched with thickest verdure, now lead ing down on a small cluster of farm - houses close nestling in a woody hollow, now offering a wide view of some highly cultivated champaign, now running through a sharp and narrow defile, - all afforded a continual sub ject of admiration to Mr. Fullarton and his children, and of silent satisfaction to his wife, who was herself a native of the country into which they were advancing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miracle at Markham: How Twelve Churches Became One HE miracle AT markham was written during the summer of 1898, and read the following fall and winter by the author to his Sunday evening congregation in the Central Church, Topeka, Kansas. It was then published as a serial in The Ram's Horn, Chicago. The facts as to church crowding, at least in small towns in the middle west of this country, are too evident to require any argument. The need of some kind of union in order to save the waste of effort in church work is also plain to all thoughtful church members. Book Cranbury

  • Author : John Whiteclay Chambers
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2012-05-23

  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Cranbury written by John Whiteclay Chambers and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the oldest towns in New Jersey, Cranbury has a long and noteworthy history that is in part distinctive and in part broadly representative of larger themes in the development of the state and the nation. In this beautifully illustrated book sponsored by Cranbury Landmarks, Inc., historian John Whiteclay Chambers II links the narrative of this remarkable place to contemporary debates about suburbanization and land-use planning. Founded in 1697 and soon featuring an inn, a gristmill, and a church, the village prospered due to its strategic location on important transportation routes between New York and Philadelphia and its fertile, productive farmland. David Brainerd, a famous and controversial young missionary, came there to preach to the Lenape Indians. In 1778, George Washington and his army stayed there on their way to the Battle of Monmouth. In the nineteenth century, roadways, railroads, and turnpikes spurred the town’s commerce and agriculture. Yet unlike many old agricultural centers transformed by suburbanization in the twentieth century, Cranbury has retained its picturesque, small-town image and much of its charm. Cranbury has the feel of a well-preserved nineteenth-century village, remarkable for its intact and cohesive domestic and commercial architecture—a status recognized when it was placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. In the last several decades, an active citizenry has innovatively linked the historic preservation of the town center with the maintenance of adjoining farmland, stream corridors, and wildlife habitats. How Cranbury preserved much of its character while accommodating economic growth provides a central theme in this book. Preserving the best of the past while astutely meeting the challenges of the present, Cranbury’s history offers an inspiration for active civic participation, a model for enlightened development, and an engaging American story.
