I may be pardoned for saying that some years ago, by reason of my advanced years, I was strongly inclined to forego further proceeding in this work, but was encouraged, and I may say inspired, to go on by the receipt of a letter from that most widely celebrated lawyer of his times, the late Judge John F. Dillon, in which he said: I have read your sketch of my life in the Iowa Annals for July, 1909, and I wish now to assure you of my sincere appreciation of the taste, skill, good judgment and literary merits of your work.
