Book excerpt: The Virginia 7th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1861, at Manassas Junction, Virginia, with men from Giles, Madison, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Greene, and Albemarle counties. It fought at First Manassas under General Jubal Early, then served with Richard Ewell, Ambrose P. Hill, James L.Kemper, and William R. Terry. In April, 1862, the regiment had 700 effectives and later was active in the various campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Gettysburg. It participated in Longstreet's Suffolk expedition, was prominent in the capture of Plymouth, then fought at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. The 7th continued the fight in the Petersburg trenches south of the James River and around Appomattox. The regiment sustained 47 casualties at First Manassas, 77 at Williamsburg, 111 at Frayser's Farm, 59 at Second Manassas, and 4 at Fredericksburg. About 40% of the 335 engaged at Gettysburg were disabled. It lost 39 men at Drewry's Bluff, and many were captured at Five Forks and Sayler's Creek. Only 20 officers and men were present at the surrender at Appomattox Court House. Two published firsthand accounts for this regiment are available plus The Seventh Virginia Infantry by David F. The 4th served from First Manassas to Appomattox Court House [never surrendering its colors] participating in every major battle and campaign which involved the Army of Northern Virginia; producing three brigadier generals. The regiment participated in the battles of Trevilian's Station, Samaria Church, and Reams' Station - as well as other engagements around Richmond - in June before being sent to the Shenandoah Valley in August. By year's end, one trooper reflected, "The men are in good spirits. There is no chance for us now, but to fight it out -and I expect we will have a rough time before we get through." By February, the 4th was back around Richmond and participated in all the fighting that preceded the surrender at Appomattox - Five Forks, Namozine Church, Deep Creek, Amelia Springs, New Store, and Appomattox Court House - where fifty-five troopers surrendered. During the war 1,922 men rode with the 4th Virginia Cavalry while 208 were killed and 381 were wounded. Companies of the Virginia 4th Cavalry Regiment Members were recruited in the counties of Prince William, Chesterfield, Madison, Culpeper, Powhatan, Goochland, Hanover, Fauquier, Buckingham, and the city of Richmond. McAllister's Hardwick Mounted Rifles. Predecessor Unit: The Georgia 21st Cavalry Battalion [also called White's Partisans] was organized during the summer of 1862. Attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, the unit served along the Georgia coast until the spring of 1864. It then merged into the 7th Georgia Cavalry Regiment. Major William P. White was in command. Predecessor Unit: The Georgia 24th Cavalry Battalion was formed during the early spring of 1863 with three companies, later increased to four. The unit served in the Savannah River area and in January, 1864, totaled 298 effectives. In the spring it merged into the 7th Georgia Cavalry Regiment. Major Edward C. Anderson, Jr. commanded the battalion. This Regiment served in Virginia under Bartow County General Pierce M. Butler Young. It participated in The Wilderness Campaign and later the battles about Cold Harbor and conflicts south of the James River. Sent to Georgia, the 7th Cavalry was dismounted and with 200 men took part in the defense of Savannah. It returned to Virginia and continued the fight around Petersburg and Appomattox. It has the distinction of being the last unit out of Richmond as it fell to the Federals. This book has a first hand account of the fall of Richmond by Edward M. The unit skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky, then fought with J. H. Morgan, Most of its men were captured at Buffington Island on July 19, 1863, and the rest at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. In their short term of service, Morgan's Men became legendary for their "Morgan's Raid" behind Union lines into Indiana. The Battle of Corydon occurred on July 9, 1863 when 450 members of the Harrison County Home Guard attempted to delay General John Hunt Morgan's 2,400 Confederate soldiers from advancing through the North. Morgan's Raid began near Sparta in eastern Tennessee on June 11, 1863 and ended near New Lisbon, Ohio on July 26, 1863 with the capture of Morgan. The intent of the raid was to divert the attention of the Union Army of Ohio from Confederate forces in Tennessee. General Braxton Bragg commanded Morgan to stay in Kentucky and not to cross the Ohio River, but for some reason Morgan defied this command. Morgan led his cavalrymen on a 46 day 1,000 mile raid through Indiana and Ohio.
