Book excerpt: The Virginia 13th Infantry Regiment completed its organization during the summer of 1861 with men from Winchester and Culpeper, Orange, Louisa, and Hampshire counties. After fighting at First Manassas and in Jackson's Valley Campaign, it served in General Early's, W. Smith's, Pegram's, and J. A. Walker's Brigade. The 13th was prominent in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then it moved with Early to the Shenandoah Valley and later was involved in the Appomattox operations. It reported 16 casualties at Cross Keys and Port Republic, 111 at Gaines' Mill, 34 at Cedar Mountain, 46 at Second Manassas, 22 at Fredericksburg, and 36 at Chancellorsville. During the Gettysburg Campaign it was left, at Winchester as provost guard. The unit sustained heavy losses at Cedar Creek and surrendered with 10 officers and 52 men. Its companies were from the counties of Stafford, Caroline, Westmoreland, Lancaster, Essex, Spotsylvania, Lunenburg, King William, King George, and Richmond. It fought in the Seven Days' Battles and the conflicts at Gainesville, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Dumfries, Rapidan Station, Brandy Station, Upperville, Hanover, Gettysburg, Williamsport, Funkstown, and Culpeper Court House. This unit reported 32 casualties at Upperville, lost four percent of the 490 engaged at Gettysburg, and had 22 disabled at Williamsport. Book excerpt: The Virginia 14th Cavalry Regiment was organized in September, 1862, with nine companies, some of which had previously served in Jackson's Squadron Virginia Cavalry. The tenth company was made up of surplus men of the other companies. The unit was attached to Jenkins', Echols', and McCausland's Brigade. It skirmished in western Virginia, then saw action at Droop Mountain and Lewisburg. During January, 1864, it had 29 officers and 424 men present for duty. The 14th continued the fight in Western Virginia, took part in the operations in the Shenandoah Valley, and disbanded in April, 1865. Company A - "White's Mounted Riflemen" commanded by Captain Mooreman B. White and were primarily from Greenbrier County. Company B - "Charlotte Cavalry," commanded by Captain Edwin E. Formed May 11,1863 to replace the original Company F. Company G - "Border Rangers," Captain Waller R Preston, from Montgomery and Roanoke Counties. Company H - "Second Rockbridge Dragoons," Captain John A. Gibson, from Rockbridge County. Company I - "Churchville Cavalry," Captain James A. Cochran, from Augusta County. Company K - "Greenbrier Swifts or Greenbrier Cavalry #2," Captain Benjamin F. Eakle, from Greenbrier County. Company L - Captain John T. Bland, from Braxton and Nicholas Counties. Transferred to the 17th Virginia Cavalry as Company I on January 28,1863. Company M - "Braxton Dragoons," Captain Clinton B. Duffield. Transferred to the 36 Battalon Cavalry as Company B on February 5, 1863. Company N - "Night Hawk Rangers," Captain James S.A. Crawford, from Roane, Jackson, Wirt, and Wood Counties. Reassigned as Company F 17th Virginia Cavalry on January 28, 1863.

The unit was assigned to Jenkins' and MacCausland's Brigade and fought in western Virginia, including the conflict at Droop Mountain. Book excerpt: The Georgia 4th Cavalry Regiment (AveryÕs) was formed with eleven companies in January, 1863, using Avery's 23rd Georgia Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. It served for a time with the Conscript Department in Tennessee, then was assigned to J.J. Morrison's, C.C. Crews', and Iverson's Brigade. The regiment participated in the Chickamauga, Knoxville, and Atlanta Campaigns, skirmished in Northern Georgia and East Tennessee, and took part in the defense of Savannah. In January, 1865, the unit was reorganized and called the 12th Cavalry. It went on to fight in the Carolinas and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Research of this unit is complicated by the fact that there was another 4th Cavalry (ClinchÕs). No roster of the 23rd Cavalry Battalion or the 4th Cavalry (AveryÕs) has been found. The records are all filed in the state archive microfilm as the GA 12th Cavalry Regiment.

Book excerpt: The 16th Connecticut was formed in Hartford County, Connecticut, in July and August 1862. It was mustered into service August 24, 1862 and became part of Mr. Lincoln's Army of the Potomac. Three weeks later the regiment first saw action at the Battle of Antietam, Maryland as part of Burnside's Ninth Army Corps. Having loaded muskets for the first time only the day before the battle, the regiment suffered significant casualties at Antietam. It next saw action at Fredericksburg, Virginia in December 1862, then at the Siege of Suffolk, Virginia in April/May 1863. In 1864, the 16th Connecticut, then with the 18th Army Corps, was part of the Union garrison at Plymouth, North Carolina, and vigorously defended Plymouth against a Confederate combined land and naval attack April 17-20, 1864 led by General Robert F. Hoke, C.S.A. Outnumbered more than 5 to 1, with no means of escape or opportunity for reinforcements, the Union garrison at Plymouth was surrendered on April 20, 1864 by Brigadier General Henry W. Wessells.

It was also known as the 2nd Regiment, Mississippi & Alabama Cavalry and Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry. Formerly: Beall's Battalion, Alabama Cavalry, Brewer's Battalion Alabama Cavalry Mississippi 4th Cavalry Battalion (Baskerville's). In records of the Battle of Shiloh it is called "Alabama and Mississippi Battalion Confederate Cavalry." Previous to that it was called "Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry," and even then contained at least one Alabama company...that of the McCaa Rangers from Pickens County. The regiment fought at Shiloh, Blackland, Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Chickamauga, protracted engagement near Dalton on May 1864, Dalton/ Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro, Stoneman's Raid, Wheelers raid into Tennessee, Saltville, Montgomery during Wilsons Alabama Raid, and the pursuit of Sherman into the Carolinas. The regiment was split in 1864 explaining what appears to be a conflict...all companies except F, G, and H are found on the list of parolees in North Carolina.
