Book excerpt: The history of this unit is very complex because over seventy companies from Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana were attached to it at one time or another. The 3rd Tennessee (Forrest's Old) Cavalry Regiment was organized at Memphis, Tennessee, in October, 1861, as an eight-company battalion. In January, 1862, it was increased to regimental size. When the mass Confederate breakout attempt at Fort Donelson failed, Forrest led most of his own men, and some other troops, through the besieging lines and then directed the rear guard during the retreat from Nashville. The regiment fought throughout the war in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky. As first organized the regiment was composed of Capt. Overton's Company (A), Brandenburg, Ky., some ninety men; Capt. Logan's Company (G), Harrodsburg, Ky., forty-five men; Kelley Troopers (Company F), Madison county, Ala., ninety men; Capt. Trewhitt's Company (E), Gadsden, Ala., eighty men; Capt. Bawl's Company (B), South Alabama, eighty men; Capt. Miner's Company (PI), Marshall county, Ala., eighty-five men; Capt. Gould's Company (D), Texas, ninety men; and Capt. May's Company (C), Memphis, Tenn., ninety men. Later it became by degrees almost entirely a regiment of West Tennessee troops.

They were responsible for the destruction of the Confederate Salt Works at Saltville, Virginia. At the end of the war they were sent in pursuit of the Confederate President Jefferson Davis. They may have been part of the Union troops involved in the disappearance of the Confederate Gold at Washington, GA, but there is no record that they were present at the capture of President Davis. Book excerpt: The Tennessee 9th Cavalry Regiment was organized at Camp Nelson from East Tennessee refugees in the early part of 1863, with Joseph H. Parsons, of Knox county, as colonel. It assisted in the capture of Cumberland gap, after which it escorted the prisoners to Lexington, Ky. Returning to Knoxville, it remained there until after the siege of that place, and was then detailed to escort prisoners to Camp Nelson, from which place it was ordered to Nashville, where it arrived in January and remained until about May 1st. It was stationed at Gallatin from that time until August, when it was constituted a portion of the brigade known as the "Governor's Guards," under the command of Gen. Gillem, which then entered upon a campaign in East Tennessee. It participated with great gallantry in all the battles of that campaign, and at Bull's gap a large portion of the regiment was taken prisoners. A large part of the 11th cavalry having also been captured it was consolidated with the remainder of the 9th. On March 21, 1865, it entered upon the raid through Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia under Gen. Stoneman. It returned to Tennessee in May and was mustered out at Knoxville in Sept., 1865.

Book excerpt: The Tennessee 8th (Baxter Smith's) Cavalry Regiment, usually called 4th Regiment, was organized in November, 1862, but annulled. Reorganized January 23, 1863, by consolidating Davis' Tennessee Cavalry Battalion and four companies from Murray's Cavalry Regiment, its ten companies contained men recruited in the counties of Marshall, Sullivan, Smith, Wilson, Cannon, Rutherford, Hamilton, Fentress, Davidson, DeKalb, and Sumner. Another company was added in August with men from Knox and Blount counties. The regiment served in Wharton's, Biffle's, Dibrell's, and T. Harrison's Brigade. After Murfreesboro the 8th fought at Chickamauga and the Atlanta Campaign. They were in central Tennessee in the late fall of 1864, then in South Carolina by mid Febuary, 1865 to participate in the Battle of Aiken. They ended the war in North Carolina, surrendering with Johnston's army. The 15th Consolidated Cavalry served in R.V. Richardson's and E.W. Rucker's Brigade, skirmished in Mississippi and Georgia, then returned to Mississippi and fought at Harrisburg. Later it moved to Tennessee and saw action at Memphis, Franklin, and Nashville.
