Book excerpt: The North Carolina 22nd Infantry Regiment, formerly the 12th Volunteers, completed its organization near Raleigh, North Carolina, in July, 1861. The men were recruited in the counties of Caldwell, McDowell, Surry, Ashe, Guilford, Alleghany, Caswell, Stokes, and Randolph. With nearly 1,000 men, the unit was ordered to Virginia and assigned to the Aquia District in the Department of Northern Virginia. Later it was brigaded under Generals Pettigrew, Pender, and Scales. It fought with the army from Seven Pines to Cold Harbor, took its place in the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and ended the war at Appomattox. In April, 1862, this regiment contained 752 men, reported 161 casualties during the Seven days' Battles, had 6 killed and 57 wounded at Second Manassas and 1 killed and 44 wounded at Fredericksburg. It lost 30 killed and 139 wounded at Chancellorsville and of the 321 engaged at Gettysburg, over fifty percent were disabled. Book excerpt: The South Carolina 22nd Infantry Regiment was organized and mustered into Confederate service in December, 1861. Some of its members were recruited in Oconee and Edgefield counties. After serving in South Carolina, the unit was sent to Virginia and assigned to General Evans', Elliot's, and Wallace's Brigade. It was active at Second Manassas, South Mountain, and Sharpsburg before being ordered to North Carolina and later Mississippi. The 22nd was engaged at Jackson, moved to Charleston, and in the spring of 1864 returned to Virginia. It participated in the Petersburg siege south and north of the James River and saw action around Appomattox. The unit reported 18 casualties at Secessionville, 17 at Rappahannock Station, and 84 during the Maryland Campaign. In October, 1863, it contained 360 effectives, and there were 216 killed or wounded at the Petersburg mine explosion. Many were disabled at Sayler's Creek, and on April 9, 1865, it surrendered 11 officers and 77 men. Book excerpt: The Mississippi 22nd Infantry Regiment, organized at Iuka, Mississippi, in August, 1861, contained 38 officers and 597 men present for duty in November. Its members were from the counties of Jefferson, Amite, Lafayette, Hinds, De Soto, and Issaquena. After fighting at Shiloh, Baton Rouge, and Corinth, the unit was assigned to Rust's and Featherston's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It participated in various conflicts during the Vicksburg siege and for a time was stationed at Jackson. Continuing the fight under General Featherston, it was active in the Atlanta Campaign, Hood's Tennessee operations, and later in North Carolina. The regiment lost 13 killed and 34 wounded at Baton Rouge, had 21 killed and 64 wounded at Peach Tree Creek, and totaled 93 officers and men in December, 1864. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The men were recruited in the counties of Davidson, Rowan, Stanly, Davie, and Mecklenburg. The 42nd followed an unusual path through the war. They missed the early battles in Virginia and Getttysburg, then were in Virginia for the later battles of 1863 and 1864, but returned to North Carolina and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.In June, 1862 it moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, and guarded prisoners captured in Jackson's Valley Campaign. Later the unit served in North Carolina at Tarboro, along the Chowan River, and at Wilmington. Assigned to General Martin's and Kirkland's Brigade, it fought at Cold Harbor, took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war with the Army of Tennessee.The regiment arrived at Bentonville on 18 March, and spent the night without fires and under orders to remain quiet. Company K consisted of 4 officers, the First Sergeant and 24 privates (numbers approximate) On 19 March, the 42nd NCT, as part of the brigade, covered the deployment of the Johnson's army at Bentonville. Returning to the division line of battle, near the center of the Confederate position, the brigade helped repulse the early Federal attacks, and participated in the Confederate assault on the Morgan's division of the XIV Corps. On 20 March, Kirkland's Brigade successfully defended from its hasty entrenchments on the division's right (just south of the "Devil's Racepath"), then withdrew with the army to the north on 22 March. Company K, 42nd NCT reported no losses at Bentonville. The brigade passed through Raleigh on 11 April, Durham on 13 April, marching on through Chapel Hill west toward High Point. By 26 April, the 42nd NCT was with Kirkland's Brigade at Center Church in Randolph County, three miles from High Point, where it was disbanded on 2 May.Company "A"-Capt. Jacob H. The regiment sustained 51 casualties at New Bern, 253 out of the 450 engaged during the Seven Days Battles, 69 at Second Manassas and Ox Hill, 52 at Sharpsburg, and 86 at Fredericksburg. There were 37 killed and 127 wounded at Chancellorsville, and of the 291 in action at Gettysburg, thirty-one percent were disabled. It lost 5 killed, 62 wounded, and 37 missing at the Wilderness, and 11 killed and 28 wounded at Spotsylvania. On February 26, 1865, the unit was ordered to North Carolina where it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 13 officers and 139 men. A detachment surrendered at Appomattox with 1 officer and 18 men.

It, along with the 18th was created as the last of the units formed in 1861 and did not participate in the early deployment. The 19th was involved the reorganization of the troops in the spring of 1862. They then moved to Mississippi, then to Kentucky where it saw action at Munfordsville. The 19th served with the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, fought with Hood in Tennessee, and was active in the South Carolina Campaign and the North Carolina operations. The regiment lost 8 killed and 72 wounded at Murfreesboro, and the 10th/19th sustained 236 casualties at Chickamauga and totaled 436 men and 293 arms in December, 1863. During the Atlanta Campaign, July 22-28, the 19th reported 12 killed, 60 wounded, and 25 missing, and there were 9 killed, 34 wounded, and 8 missing at Ezra Church. It surrendered on April 26, 1865, with 76 men.

Book excerpt: The North Carolina 4th Infantry Regiment Senior Reserves was also known as the 73rd Infantry Regiment North Carolina Troops. The 4th Reserves does not appear in the Official Records. The regiment was organized in early 1865 and participated in the Carolina's campaign. It surrendered as part of the Army of TN at Durham Station, Orange Co, NC April 26, 1865. As the name implies, the Senior Reserves were made up of older men and men who were unfit to serve in the regular army. Unlike the militia and "home guards" however, these men were in actual Confederate Service acting primarily as provost guards, railroad guards and operators, and pickets at bridges and forts.The 4th Senior Reserves served as mounted patrol guard for the Northwester North Carolina counties.
