Download or read book Kentucky s Mounted Infantry Regiments 1861 1865 written by Charles H. Bogart and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kentucky chose to remain in the Union during the Civil War, but far too often her heart embraced the Confederacy. Of those Kentuckians who fought in the Civil War two thirds wore Union Blue and one third Confederate Grey. All fought in the Western Theater of War, soldiering in infantry and cavalry regiments. Kentucky outfitted twelve horse mounted infantry regiments. These regiments, with the exception of the 4th Mounted Infantry and the 49th Mounted Infantry, served their enlistments in Kentucky. The 4th Mounted Infantry Regiment saw duty with the Army of Cumberland and Wilson's Cavalry Corps in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. The 49th Mounted Infantry Regiment served with the Army of the Ohio in Tennessee. The contribution of the twelve Kentucky mounted infantry regiments has been overlooked by most historians telling the story of Kentucky during the Civil War. This book seeks to serve as an introduction to the military history of Kentucky's mounted infantry regiments."--Back cover.

The unit was attached to the Department of East Tennessee, then the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee. It skirmished in various conflicts in the mountainous region of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Early in 1865 it disbanded. Research on this unit has proven to be quite difficult. There was also a Federal Unit referred to as the 2nd Kentucky Battalion. Additionally, a Federal Colonel named Thomas Johnson also fought in the same theatre and Gen. Morgan's Cavalry did not leave very many records of their actions. For the early part of the war, the 2nd's actions follow the path of the rest of the men of Morgan's Raiders. Following Gen. Morgan's death however, the 2nd remained in Kentucky and Tennessee and Western Virginia. They did not go with the rest of Morgan's men to the Atlanta campaign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kentucky 7th Cavalry Regiment was organized in September, 1862, using Gano's Texas Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. The unit skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky, then fought with J. H. Morgan, Most of its men were captured at Buffington Island on July 19, 1863, and the rest at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. In their short term of service, Morgan's Men became legendary for their "Morgan's Raid" behind Union lines into Indiana. The Battle of Corydon occurred on July 9, 1863 when 450 members of the Harrison County Home Guard attempted to delay General John Hunt Morgan's 2,400 Confederate soldiers from advancing through the North. Morgan's Raid began near Sparta in eastern Tennessee on June 11, 1863 and ended near New Lisbon, Ohio on July 26, 1863 with the capture of Morgan. The intent of the raid was to divert the attention of the Union Army of Ohio from Confederate forces in Tennessee. General Braxton Bragg commanded Morgan to stay in Kentucky and not to cross the Ohio River, but for some reason Morgan defied this command. Morgan led his cavalrymen on a 46 day 1,000 mile raid through Indiana and Ohio.
