Book Hidden History of Early Richmond

Download or read book Hidden History of Early Richmond written by Maurice Robinson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richmond's Civil War history is familiar to every local and visitor, but fewer know the stories of the city's early days. Did you know that some of the area's earliest settlers were Huguenots fleeing religious persecution in France? Major John Clarke designed many of Richmond's first public buildings, but did you know that he was one of the masterminds behind the area's early industry as well? Tredegar Iron Works was the arsenal of the Confederacy, but Richmond-area foundries at Westham and Bellona supplied weapons to the armies of the Revolution as well. Richmond's first penitentiary was designed by Benjamin Latrobe before his term as architect of the Capitol. Local author Maurice Robinson narrates the tales of early Richmond's seven hills and beyond.

Book A Short History of Richmond

Download or read book A Short History of Richmond written by Jack Trammell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven hills at the James River fall line that Captain John Smith first witnessed in 1607 became the site of a pivotal American city. Richmond was a birthplace of the American Revolution. It became the permanent capital of Virginia and served as the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War. In the early twentieth century, industry expanded in the city as companies like DuPont and Philip Morris built factories. Cultural institutions expanded, with Richmond's first radio station and movie theater opening in the 1920s, before the Great Depression hit the city hard. The city rose from financial struggle to a highly industrialized center for manufacturing and vital transportation hub. Join authors Jack Trammell and Guy Terrell as they narrate the rich history of the River City.

Book Richmond Her Past and Present Classic Reprint

Download or read book Richmond Her Past and Present Classic Reprint written by W. Asbury Christian and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richmond, Her Past and Present The history of a city is largely the history of a State, and this is especially true when that city is the Capital of the State. Rich mond can claim an historical inheritance greater than this: her history is peculiarly interwoven with that of the United States, both at its formative period and at the great crisis that threatened the existence of the Union. Being the Capital of the Confederacy, she was from the beginning of the Civil War to the end the most notable city of the country at that time. No city in America, there fore, is richer in historical interest than is Richmond. In addition to this she has a local history of men and movements which is of especial value to every one connected with the city who appreciates the efforts of the fathers to bequeath to them a beautiful, well-built and well-ordered place of habitation. I have undertaken to trace this history from the time the white man first appeared on the banks of the Powhatan and in honor of his sovereign called it the James, until to-day. With a wealth of material and a limited space, it has been difficult to thread my way along the years and to know what to leave out and what to put in the book. It has been my purpose to represent every phase of the city's life and to tell something of interest to the people of every class - professional, commercial, industrial and social. At the risk of being tedious I have given the names of the men back of the movements in order that we may become acquainted with the builders of our city as they come before the eyes of the public. The names of many worthy citizens have not been mentioned because they did not happen to come before the public vision. I have told of a few crimes which have been so notorious as to become a part of the history and many I have omitted. My purpose has been to spare as much as possible the feelings of those connected with the criminals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
