About this time, that is about the 10th of October, occurred the great fire in Chicago, which so nearly destroyed that city, and turned out its hundreds of thousands of prosperous people without homes or means of subsistence. The mayor of that city made an appeal to the generosity of the public for aid to prevent the suffering and starvation that must otherwise follow so appaling a disaster. Among the cities of the United States, Kansas City was not least prompt in responding to this appeal.
