Download or read book Gender crime and empire written by Kirsty Reid and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1803 and 1853, some 80,000 convicts were transported to Van Diemen’s Land. Revising established models of the colonies, which tend to depict convict women as a peculiarly oppressed group, Gender, crime and empire argues that convict men and women in fact shared much in common. Placing men and women, ideas about masculinity, femininity, sexuality and the body, in comparative perspective, this book argues that historians must take fuller account of class to understand the relationships between gender and power. The book explores the ways in which ideas about fatherhood and household order initially informed the state’s model of order, and the reasons why this foundered. It considers the shifting nature of state policies towards courtship, relationships and attempts at family formation which subsequently became matters of class conflict. It goes on to explore the ways in which ideas about gender and family informed liberal and humanitarian critiques of the colonies from the 1830s and 1840s and colonial demands for abolition and self-government.

Book Historical Records of Australia

Download or read book Historical Records of Australia written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 1236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Historical Records of Australia' project aims to re-establish and continue an essential scholarly source for research and discovery in 19th Century Australian history. The resumption of the series is of immediate relevance in recently developed areas such as Aboriginal Studies and of continuing relevance to legal, administrative and social history. The 'Series III, Volume IX' concerns itself with the letters and documents of Tasmania in the year 1830. It shows the development of educational and religious institutions, the maturation of Governor Arthur's convict system, issues of trial by jury, and original dispatches of the period between the Governor and London. It is an invaluable historical account of the early growth of Australia.

Book The Role of the Solicitor General

Download or read book The Role of the Solicitor General written by Gabrielle Appleby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind every government there is an impressive team of hard-working lawyers. In Australia, the Solicitor-General leads that team. A former Attorney-General once said, 'The Solicitor-General is next to the High Court and God.' And yet the role of government lawyers in Australia, and specifically the Solicitor-General as the most senior of government lawyers, is under-theorised and under-studied. The Role of the Solicitor-General: Negotiating Law, Politics and the Public Interest goes behind the scenes of government – drawing from interviews with over 45 government and judicial officials – to uncover the history, theory and practice of the Australian Solicitor-General. The analysis reveals a role that is of fundamental constitutional importance to ensuring both the legality and the integrity of government action, thus contributing to the achievement of rule-of-law ideals. The Solicitor-General also works to defend government action and prosecute government policies in the court, and thus performs an important role as messenger between the political and judicial branches of government. But the Solicitor-General's position, as both an internal integrity check on government and an external warrior for government, gives rise to competing pressures: between the law, politics and the public interest. The office of the Solicitor-General in Australia has evolved many characteristics across the almost two centuries of its history in an attempt to navigate these tensions. These pressures are not unique to the Australian context. The understanding of the Australian position provided by this book is informed by, and will inform, comparative analysis of the role of government lawyers across the world.
