Download or read book Historical Records and Studies Vol 4 written by U. S. Catholic Historical Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Records and Studies, Vol. 4: Parts 1 and 2; October 1906 IN appearing before you to deliver the address at this, your annual meeting, I am mindful of two facts - that this society is the American Catholic Historical Society, and that its birthplace and home is the great metropolitan city of New York. The aim and purpose of your existence as a body is the collection of historical material, and the encouragement of historical investigation into the spread of Catholic teaching, and the rise and development of institutions which embody Catholic truth, or were promoted by Catholics who have a claim on our undying loyalty by the virtue and integrity of their lives and the splendor of their achievements. Hence it is that I have chosen, for the subject of my address, The Charter of Liberties and the New York Assembly of 1683. On October 14, 1683, two hundred and twenty-two years ago, the first representative assembly of New York Province met within the walls of Fort James. It was a memorable event in the history of New York and in the rise and development of free institutions. Its presiding officer and controlling genius was Thomas Dongan, the first Catholic Governor of the Province - s ruler, who, for breadth of mind, wide sympathy, and executive ability, stands far in advance of his times, and, measured by the system of government which he inaugurated. Book excerpt: Mythodologies challenges the implied methodology in contemporary studies in the humanities. We claim, at times, that we gather facts or what we will call evidence, and from that form hypotheses and conclusions. Of course, we recognize that the sum total of evidence for any argument is beyond comprehension; therefore, we construct, and we claim, preliminary hypotheses, perhaps to organize the chaos of evidence, or perhaps simply to find it; we might then see (we claim) whether that evidence challenges our tentative hypotheses. Ideally, we could work this way. Yet the history of scholarship and our own practices suggest we do nothing of the kind. Rather, we work the way we teach our composition students to write: choose or construct a thesis, then invent the evidence to support it. This book has three parts, examining such methods and pseudo-methods of invention in medieval studies, bibliography, and editing. Part One, "Noster Chaucer," looks at examples in Chaucer studies, such as the notion that Chaucer wrote iambic pentameter, and the definition of a canon in Chaucer. "Our" Chaucer has, it seems, little to do with Chaucer himself, and in constructing this entity, Chaucerians are engaged largely in self-validation of their own tradition. Part Two, "Bibliography and Book History," consists of three studies in the field of bibliography: the recent rise in studies of annotations; the implications of presumably neutral terminology in editing, a case-study in cataloguing. Part Three, "Cacophonies: A Bibliographical Rondo," is a series of brief studies extending these critiques to other areas in the humanities. It seems not to matter what we talk about: meter, book history, the sex life of bonobos. In all of these discussions, we see the persistence of error, the intractability of uncritical assumptions, and the dominance of authority over evidence. TABLE OF CONTENTS // Part I. Excerpt: ...examination, and at its conclusion I was sent to Cambridge jail without bail, to await the action of the Grand Jury. About one hundred others were arrested at the same time I was, but only twelve beside myself were ever indicted. As fears were entertained that I might be rescued, I was taken to old Concord, where I remained in jail until court convened--in November, I think. At that time two indictments were found against me, after four days had been spent in examining witnesses, one for arson and one for burglary, both hanging offenses in those days. I was tried in East Cambridge before Judges Marcus, Morton, Shaw and True. My counsel was Samuel Wheeler and another lawyer, whose name I have forgotten. The trial lasted ten days, and during the whole time the court room was crowded to its utmost capacity by men and women, while hundreds were turned away every day. The interest was the greater because I was tried as principal, while all the others were either accessories or indicted for minor offenses. The testimony against me was point blank and sufficient to have convicted twenty men, but somehow I proved an alibi, and the jury brought in a verdict of not guilty, after having been out for twenty-one hours. When the verdict was announced such a shout went up as I never heard even in a New Hampshire town meeting. So beside themselves were the spectators that several were fined by the court before order could be restored. Standing at the door were three mounted horsemen who, the instant the verdict was rendered, started on the gallop, one for West Cambridge, one for Boston, and the third for Charlestown, each swinging his hat and shouting, "Not guilty," "Not guilty.'? The streets were lined with people, and the news of the...
