As a part of the combined First and Fifth Army Corps, it will always share in the common reputation; and this was a corps that never gave ground to the enemy, which marched and fought battles in every month but January from May, 1864, to May, 1865; which made all the extensions of the line of the Union army around Petersburg by contests with the enemy, from the place where the mine was sprung in the summer of 1864 to the capture of his extreme right on the White Oak road, at Five Forks, on April 1, 1865, and which finally stretched its unflinching lines across the path of retreat of the Army of Virginia at Appomattox.
