Book excerpt: A series of multidisciplinary scientific expeditions were conducted in 2002, 2003 and 2004 to the Austral Islands in five inhabited islands of Raivavae, Rapa, Rimatara, Rurutu and Tubuai. The expeditions were funded through a larger research program aimed to inventory and evaluate the terrestrial biodiversity of French Polynesia. The main goals of these expeditions were to: identify and characterize the different terrestrial and freshwater native habitats, in order to assess their conservation status, and to localize the natural areas of high ecological value; conduct exhaustive inventories of native and alien vascular plants and animals (mainly birds, molluscs, insects and arthropods); estimate the distribution and abundance of threatened species, and assess their conservation status; identify past and current threats to species and their habitats; study the dynamics and evolution of the terrestrial biota compared with historic data; propose recommendations for biodiversity conservation and natural resource management. The results obtained during these scientific expeditions, have greatly improved the knowledge of the ecology, biogeography, evolutionary and conservation biology of the Austral Islands terrestrial biota."

Firstly, but barely explored during the expedition of the Challenger (1875), deep-sea fauna from Papua New Guinea remained a gap of knowledge until the recent series of expeditions launched by the museum: to Biopapua (2010), Papua Niugini (2012), Madeep (2014) and Kavieng (2014). From these expeditions' amazing samplings of benthic fauna, an international network of naturalists and taxonomists, federated around the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos program, has described since 2012 more than 258 new species of mollusks, fishes, sea spiders, corals, and crustaceans. This special Papua New Guinea volume comprises descriptions and new occurrences for more than 360 species including cirripeds, crabs, armored shrimps, ghost shrimps, and squat lobsters. Many are illustrated with spectacular color images of freshly caught specimens. With forty-four new species of crustaceans described in this volume, more than three hundred new marine species will have been discovered around Papua New Guinea and its satellite islands.

Beadle In contrast to the more sta bie oceans, inland waters are, on the geological time scale, short-lived and are subject to great fluctuations in chemical composition and physical features. Very few lakes and rivers have existed continuously for more than a million years, and the life of the majority is to be measured in thousands or less. Earth movements, erosion and long-term climatic changes in the past have caused many of them to appear and disappear. No wonder then that most freshwater organism are especially adapted to great changes and many even to temporary extinction of their environment. Recent studies of residual sediments from existing and extinct lakes in tropical Africa have told us much about their age and the past history of their faunas and floras, from which we may deduce something about the climate and the conditions in the water in the past. The forces that have formed and moulded the African Great Lakes have been catastrophic in their violence and effects. They are not yet finished, but the present rate of change is, in human terms, too slow for direct observation of the ecological effects. The large man-made lakes are providing very good opportunities for studying the chemi cal and biological consequences of the initial filling but, once filled, they are artificially protected against major fluctuations.
