This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleon and the Marshals of the Empire, Vol. 1 The view which a commercial and industrial age takes of war is, perhaps, as far removed from perma nent truth, as that which a military society entertains respecting trade and mechanics. To one who gets beyond the feelings and theories of a particular age and country, and looks upon the history of the world, from an abstract and positive point of view, war must present itself as one of the great and regular agents of providential operation, and one of the established and permanent conditions of human society. Upon this subject, we must keep the distinction which the Author of all truth has taught us to make, between the qualities of his conduct, by whom events come, and the character of those events, as appointed and indis pensable parts of God's benignant providence to men. The same act may be a crime in him who does it, and a blessing to all who partake of it: the same occur rence may be a millstone upon the conscience of its author, and a life-giving source of goodness, and strength, and happiness, to all who come within its influences. The wickedness of him by whom war comes, is no stain upon the glory of the war when it has come, nor upon the virtues of those who are com. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fall of Napoleon, Vol. 2: An Historical Memoir It has pleased historians to describe the parting of Duroc and Napoleon as extremely a 'ecting. This is not yet the place to sum up the character of the French Emperor; but though we willingly grant that the inti macies contracted amid the toils, dangers, and vicissi tudes of war, are more likely to take a firm hold on the feelings which go towards the formation of friendship, than any which can arise under other circumstances, we are not prepared to allow that Napoleon could enter tain a disinterested attachment for any one. Nor will the deep af iction which historians tell us he evinced on the occasion of Duroc's death, tend to alter our opinion because the writers who have described his behaviour differ so widely from each other, as to render it very evident that some must have drawn principally from their own imagination. We are told, that for the rest of the day Napoleon remained in front of his tent, sur rounded by his Guards, who pitied their Emperor, as if he had lost one of his children. On no other occasion was he observed to be so much exhausted, or absorbed by grief, as to decline listening to military details or giving military orders. Book Memoirs to Serve for the History of Napoleon I Vol 2

This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs to Serve for the History of Napoleon I, Vol. 2: From 1802 to 1815 General Clarke, who followed the Emperor in this campaign with me, was appointed governor of Vienna. He was entrusted with several missions abroad after this campaign, and his post as Secretary to the Cabinet remained as unoccupied as the second post. The assistance which it had been the Emperor's intention to give me was accordingly only an illusory one. Another year passed without any change being made in the work in the cabinet. I repeated my application to Napoleon to obtain an assistant. What I needed above all was to be relieved of the care of the papers which had to be classified after having been answered. The multiplicity of my occupations prevented me from keeping these papers in sufficiently good order to be able to find any draft of a letter or a despatch which the Emperor might want to see at a moment's notice. Napoleon avoided satisfying my request for some time longer, either by making promises which he did not keep, or on various pretexts. He used to urge me to get married, assuring me that he would arrange my work in such a manner that I should get some rest. Various matches were proposed to me by him and the Empress Josephine, including a lady who was one of her relations, and whom she obliged me to call upon at her house. But at that time I did not feel any vocation for marriage. Besides, I was determined that if I ever did make up my mind to get married I would choose my own wife. As a matter of fact, more than two years passed before I contracted the irrevocable bonds, the solemnity of which so impressed me. Seeing that the Emperor put off keeping his promise every day, I became discouraged and fell ill, as much from worry as from overwork. Download or read book The History of Napoleon the First Vol 2 of 4 written by P. Lanfrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Napoleon the First, Vol. 2 of 4: 1800-1804 True to his character, which was never to leave anything to chance, Moreau judged that to cross the Rhine at a single point between Schaffhausen and Constance would be an operation too dangerous in the presence of Kray's men, with the immense facilities of concentration given them by their position at Donaueschingen. The event fully proved the correctness of his judgment, since Kray, though completely misled by his manoeuvres, was yet able to bring a large force upon the field of battle at Engen. Under the conditions laid down by Bonaparte, success would have been more than doubtful, while defeat was irreparable. To this perilous passage, which would have to be effected by main force and under the fire of a formidable foe, Moreau preferred a plan which would enable him to make use of our many bridges over the Rhine, and which, making the operation extend from Strasburg to Schaffhausen, would be likely to draw Kray towards the Lower Rhine and across the Black Forest, while he himself would throw the bulk of his army across the river a little above the lake of Constance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Memoirs, of Napoleon, 1815, Vol. 9 The Translator thinks, that the work cannot fail to satisfy the curiosity of the nation. Besides furnishing ample details of the operations which occurred in the Campaign of 1815, it is enriched with military criticisms of the first order. It is napoleon himself who Speaks. He criticises the conduct of the Generals who were Opposed to him, while he hears ample testimony to the undaunted gallantry of the British troops; and he supports his arguments by reasonings and by proofs. It is unnecessary to praise such a work: It unmasks some reputations, but it declares the truth. It will furnish to history inap preciable materials, and to military men interesting lessons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Life and Correspondence of Nathanael Greene, Major General of the Armies of the United States, in the War of the Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 With regard to that part of those events in which General Greene was himself an actor, there is the fullest evidence that it was his intention to give to the world an exposition of the causes and motives that governed his actions. In a letter to Mr. John Adams, of the 28th of January, he writes thus the American armies have gained some advantage; my public letters will have given you some idea of them, but the previous measures which led to important events, and my reasons for those measures must lie in the dark until a more leisure hour. The people are deter mined to defend themselves from age to age, rather than give up their independence. It is not material to explain, though there is no difficulty in doing it, why these papers were never brought to public notice, after the death of General Greene. Suffice it to say, that much time was necessarily consumed, after they came into my possession, __in perusing them, and making my extracts from them. But after surmounting this labour, [found that there was a considerable space yet to be filled up, and for which the materials could only be found among his early friends, and in the country in which he passed his early life, and acted during the greatest part of the Revolutionary war.' This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection From the Letters and Despatches of the First Napoleon, Vol. 1 of 3: With Explanatory Notes In the selections which we have made from the voluminous Correspondence of Napoleon we have confined ourselves to letters of general interest and such documents as throw light upon the character of one of the most wonderful men ever born. Much has already been written about Napoleon; but people still write about Caesar. The marvellous career of both captains furnishes an almost inexhaustible mine for the student of history. Both left behind them something more than the names of their victories, something more solid than their material conquests. As we find the portrait of Caesar in his Commentaries, so we find the portrait of Napoleon in his Correspondence. We fancy that the selections we have made will give a fair insight into the character and genius of the man who, succeeding the Revolution, re-established order in France and swept like a hurricane over the rest of Europe, destroying in his passage a great deal that was rotten.
