Book A Concise History of the Russian Orthodox Church

Download or read book A Concise History of the Russian Orthodox Church written by Neil Kent and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodox Christianity is one of the world's major religions, and the Russian Orthodox Church is by far its largest denomination. Few know its history and spiritual richness, however. Neil Kent's comprehensive new book fills that gap. The Russian Orthodox Church's Eastern roots, including its dogma, canons, and practices, are explored, along with the political and military contexts in which it carried out its mission over the centuries. Hemmed in between the Catholic powers of pre-Reformation Europe in the West, the Mongol steppe empires to the East, and the Islamic civilizations to the South, Russia and its Church found themselves in a difficult position during the Middle Ages. The Russian Orthodox Church's greatest strength was in the spiritual power of its liturgy, prayerfulness, icons, and monastic life. But even as the Church consolidated its authority under its own metropolitan, and later patriarch, it came into conflict with political rulers who sought to undermine it. After defeating foreign challenges, the Church underwent a painful reformation and schism, finally coming under government control. The Church survived this "Babylonian Captivity," and, in philosophical and spiritual terms, flourished under tsarist rule while still facing rising opposition. The fall of the monarchy in 1917 led to the Church's brief rejuvenation, but communist rule spelled relentless persecution with little respite at home and a lively émigré church carrying Russian traditions abroad. In post-Soviet times, however, the Church enjoyed an extraordinary resurrection and, benefiting from the spiritual richness and reunion with the Russian Orthodox Church abroad, once again became a spiritual pillar of the Russian people and a beacon of hope and Christian values, not only in Russia but anywhere it is currently practiced.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Orthodox Church: A Treatise of Her Origin and Life Grandmother of Wladimir, the wise Duchess Olga, was baptized in Constantinople in the year 955. Hence she is esteemed the first who planted Christianity upon Russian soil. For, although her ad monitions to her son Swjatoslaw to become a Christian were nu heeded, yet her example contributed greatly to deter mine her nephew, Wladimir, to receive Christianity from the pure source of the Oriental Church. Already at this time it was strongly rumored, that the Russian Grand Duke, weary of heathenism, designed to create a change in the religion of his realm. Ou this account, many neighboring nations dispatched their ambassadors to Wladimir, in order to win him over to their belief. Even the Mohammedans, as also the J ews, endeavored to interest the heathen Duke in their belief. But the Grand Duke hesitated for some time to lay aside heathenism. Then appeared before him a Greek missionary who almost succeeded by his sermon in win ning the heart of the heathen Duke for the true faith. Still the wise Wladimir did not yet trust the eloquence even of this man, and summoning his counsellors, he proposed to them to make a choice from the difierent beliefs. These unanimously determined not to accept this or that faith until representatives chosen from the various regions had been convinced on the Spot of the excellencies of the one over the other.' The omissa ries soon returned, after they had visited the churches in Germany, Bulgaria and Greece. The first two did I not satisfy them, but they were highly delighted with the splendor and dignity of the Greek ritual. They felt, they said, as if in the presence of the angels in.
