Il commence ses etudes en 1704 au college Louis-le-Grand dirige par les Jesuites. Il y fait de brillantes etudes de rhetorique et de philosophie, obtient des premiers prix. Tout en etant fort critique des Jesuites, il garda toute sa vie une grande admiration pour ses professeurs et les grandes entreprises missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jesus, en Chine et au Paraguay. Vers 1706, il compose une tragedie Amulius et Numitor; on en trouvera plus tard des extraits qui seront publies au XIXe siecle. Apres sa classe de philosophie, il quitte le college en 1711 pour s'inscrire a l'ecole de droit de Paris. Voltaire a mene une carriere d'homme de lettres que ce soit dans le domaine de la poesie ou dans celui du theatre. Parmi la soixantaine de pieces qu'il ecrivit, l'histoire litteraire a retenu notamment Zaire (1732), Adelaide du Guesclin (1734) et Alzir; ou, Les Americains (1736).
