Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Introduction to Mathematical Literature The mathematical literature is unusually rich in content and is composed of a great variety of elements. It contains many results that would appeal to every one if they were presented in the proper form and at the proper time. One of the difficult problems which present themselves to those interested in the diffusion of mathematical knowledge is how to establish a proper correspondence between the subject matter and the individual. This problem is especially serious in view of the fact that misfits along this line are often disastrous. Hence it is very desirable that the mathematical student be led to points from which he can overlook domains of considerable extent in order that he may be able to form a somewhat independent judgment as regards the regions which he might like to examine more closely. The main object of the present work is to guide the reader to such points of observation. These observation points should also appeal to those who are interested in general educational questions but do not have time to enter upon a study of the abstruse developments in this particular field. Mathematical accuracy should not be confused with mathematical minutiæ. Comprehensive views are often very helpful and fill an important place in mathematical education. Book A Short Account of the History of Mathematics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short Account of the History of Mathematics Classic Reprint written by W. W. Rouse Ball and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Account of the History of Mathematics The subject-matter of this book is a historical summary of the development of mathematics, illustrated by the lives and discoveries of those to whom the progress of the science is mainly due. It may serve as an introduction to more elaborate works on the subject, but primarily it is intended to give a short and popular account of those leading facts in the history of mathematics which many who are unwilling, or have not the tinie, to study it systematically may yet desire to know. The first edition was substantially a transcript of some lectures which I delivered in the year 1888 with the object of giving a sketch of the history, previous to the nineteenth century, that should be intelligible to any one acquainted with the elements of mathematics. In the second edition, issued in 1893, I rearranged parts of it, and introduced a good deal of additional matter. The third edition, issued in 1901, was revised, but not materially altered; and the present edition is practically a reprint of this, save for a few small corrections and additions. Book A New and Easy Introduction to the Mathematics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New and Easy Introduction to the Mathematics Classic Reprint written by Ira Wanzer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and Easy Introduction to the Mathematics The author is aware that there is a number of works. Of this nature already in use, in different parts of this country. It does not appear, however, that any one of them is now, or is likely very soon to be, in general use in schools throughout the united-states; and hence it may be infered that none of them have met the approbation of the public, generally. The author is not disposed to ex patiate on the defects of those systems, nor on the merits of his own; being persuaded that enlightened persons will examine and judge for themselves, and that his work, as well as others, must stand or fall, according to its real merit or demerit. Book Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Bertrand Russell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundbreaking in its day the aim of this fantastic, if dated book by renowned philosopher Bertrand Russell is nothing less than to demonstrate that all of mathematics is describable by a single system of logic. It does so in a way which, while not simplistic, is still accessible to anyone willing to put in some thought. A foundation in logic and philosophy would certainly be a help when reading this book however. This approach was later demonstrated to be impossible, with Kurt Godel's incompleteness theorems proving that for any consistent logical system there are some problems which cannot be solved within that system. Godel's work would not have been the same without these earlier attempts however, so they provide an essential context for understanding these later developments. This does not mean that Russell's work is devoid of insight or use for its own sake however, as most of the individual sections as well as the history of mathematical philosophy are very valuable. Those whose interest is piqued by this book may wish to move on to Russell and Whitehead's Principia Mathematica for a more difficult and in depth work.
