Book Historical Evidences of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Evidences of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Evidences of the New Testament SO accustomed are we to regard the New Tes tament as one book, the work of a single writer, that we are apt to forget and overlook the variety of its contents. It consists of twenty-seven sep arate and independent documents, composed by eight or nine different persons at very different times and under the most varied circumstances. The works of the writers of the Old Testament fall under the head of history proper. They set before us primarily and mainly the history of a nation. In the New Testament all this is changed. The authors of the Gospels are not in any sense historians of their nation. They are biographers of Christ. Even the writer of the Acts of the Apostles confines himself to the doings of those whose business it was to spread abroad the doc trines taught by Christ throughout the world. The points, therefore, where the documents of the New Testament touch upon history proper are not direct, but indirect, and the allusions are and must be incidental. But for this very reason they are extremely important as respects their evidential value. Why? Because, in the first place, to maintain accuracy in the wide field of incidental allusions is a matter of the utmost diffi culty, and no one but an honest, truthful writer would venture on such a perilous experiment at all. Because, in the second place, historical ac curacy in reference to minute incidental allusions is utterly at variance with the mythical spirit, of which the narrative contained in the New Testa ment is sometimes affirmed to be the product. If the whole story is a myth, fabricated ab its composers would have had no object in maintain ing historical accuracy at all, or in being careful that their facts agreed with the testimony of con temporary classical writers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Evidence of the New Testament: An Inductive Study in Christian Evidences This treatise is a contribution to the Christian Evidences demanded by the times. It is dedicated to the intelligent young men of the period. The work is designed to meet the skeptical issues of the day which deny the historical character of Christianity during the first three centuries, holding that the claim is not absolutely based upon the facts of Christ's life as is narrated in the four Gospels. No other work known to the writer has proposed to traverse this territory upon the lines and in the form here adopted. It embraces the period between the crucifixion of Christ and the time when Constan tine the Great established Christianity throughout the Roman Empire as the religion of the State in A. D. 325. After this date there is no question made touching the historicity of Christianity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines of New Testament History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of New Testament History Classic Reprint written by Francis Ernest Gigot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number of readers, such as teachers of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Book Have We Satisfactory Evidence of the New Testament Miracles Classic Reprint

Download or read book Have We Satisfactory Evidence of the New Testament Miracles Classic Reprint written by Ludwig von Gerdtell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Have We Satisfactory Evidence of the New Testament Miracles? Here is the dictum of Modern Theology: "Apply criticism to the Gospel narratives: educe thereby a Jesus without miracles: and the whole world of culture will adore him." It sounds plausible, but it is a promise which cannot be performed. For the Gospel of the Apostles is wedded with its characteristic standpoint and its miracles. They are historically indivisible. The Gospel of the Apostles is a monument of history that defies all attempts at modernisation or reconstruction. You must accept it or reject it in its entirety. No impartial student can eliminate from this integral whole the miracles or treat the viewpoint of Jesus as superseded, whilst placing his person in the foreground. For, once again, the whole historical picture and the whole outline of the life of Jesus is bound up with miracle. The miraculous is in organic unity with him. Indeed, by psychological law, his whole mental penetration into the future and the thoughts of others, was nothing else than a miracle. Attempt the critical process of weeding out the "tares" of miracles from the life of Jesus, and you will find yourself logically compelled to root up also the wheat of his words as well. If consistent, you will be driven to abandon the whole of his life-history. The Gospel Records confront us with this issue: If the miracles really happened, then the gospels are authentic documents of an objective Divine Revelation. Are the miracles legendary only, then the Gospels themselves are Apocrypha of dubious historical value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Story of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the New Testament It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit Of God, guiding them constantly from within. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legal and Historical Proof of the Resurrection of the Dead: With an Examination of the Evidence in the New Testament Civilization would make little prog ress if each succeeding age, disregard ing all that had already been aecom plished, should attempt to establish for itself first and fundamental principles in the various branches of learning. These must, generally, be accepted by the ordinary student as established, and here education begins. In my vlew it is not necessary, nor even desirable, to go into an inquiry as to the authenticity of the Holy Scrip tures, nor Whether these writings are evidence of the facts therein set forth. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History and Literature What is believed to be a unique feature of the book is the paraphrasing of the epistles and the apocalypse in modern, untechnical language. This last section in each of the later chapters, it is hoped, will help Bible students to get a clear, comprehensive grasp of the main teachings in each book. Another feature, it is hoped, that will be helpful to young students, busy pastors, and Sunday school teachers, is the bibliography given at the end of the book. Each student should provide himself with two other reference books from these lists - especially with the commentaries suggested in parts II-V. Book New Testament Theology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book New Testament Theology Vol 1 of 2 written by Willibald Beyschlag and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Historical Account of the Teaching of Jesus and of Primitive Christianity According to the New Testament Sources The following work, which has now the honour of being translated into English, and which contains the main pro duct of many years of theological occupation with the New Testament, has met with a more favourable reception in Germany than I could have expected. Not that my anti cipations that it would displease the extreme parties on right and left have been falsified; for even the moderate party now dominant in Germany, whilst regarding it with more respect, has treated it as alien to itself. All the more encouraging is that practical criticism, which consists in the eager purchase, diligent reading, and warm praise of a book by susceptible readers. This experience pleases me the more that I View New Testament theology as the source destined to rejuvenate our traditional Church and doctrinal systems, concerning the insufficiency of which our age, with all its other differences, is pretty unanimous. There are undoubtedly needs and feelings in England like our own, though, perhaps, the power of orthodox scholasticism may not be so great, and the inclina tion to abandon tradition and go back to the Holy Scriptures much stronger; and therefore I hail it as a new sign of the spiritual fellowship of German and English Protestantism, that my effort to promote a deeper and freer conception of the New Testament religion has met with sympathy on the other Side of the Channel, and is to gain a wider Sphere of influence through a careful and intelligent translation. Biblical theology, as a science still in its infancy, is liable to more uncertainty as to what exactly are its idea and the limits of its task than any other branch of theological science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the New Testament The New Testament presents the paradox of a literature born of protest against the tyranny of a canon, yet ultimately canonized itself through an increasing demand for/ external authority. This paradox is full of significance. We must examine it more closely. The work of Jesus was a consistent effort} to set religion free from the deadening system of the scribes. He was conscious of a direct, divine authority. The broken lights of former inspiration are lost in the full dawn of God's presence to His soul. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture on the Historic Evidence of the Authorship and Transmission of the Books of the New Testament: Delivered Before the Plymouth Young Men's Christian Association, October 14, 1851 All men are not astronomers; yet all can appreciate the results of mathematical knowledge when applied to astronomy; just in the same way may the results of critical studies, applied to Scripture, be understood and used by readers in general. It is true that many may not even remember the names of the early witnesses to our New Testament books; still, however, if they can grasp the facts of their evidence, they will carry away and re tain those results which will be of great practical value when occasion should arise. On ordinary subjects there are many things to which we give credit, because we rely on the accuracy of our informant. Thus, even amongst men of some scientific knowledge, but few calculate an eclipse for themselves they see that its occurrence is stated in the almanack, and that is enough: and as to persons in general, they believe that the eclipse will take place at such a day and hour, with perhaps hardly a thought how it can be pre defined by astronomers. And so on most subjects: we trust the information which we receive, because we believe in the competency of our informant. But when questions are raised, then, indeed, there is Often enough a desire to investigate the grounds on which the information rests; we may frequently satisfy ourselves as to these, though we never could have traced them out for ourselves. Thus, as to this part of Christian evidence, I only ask for credit to be given me for bringing forward true testi monies Of persons who lived at the times mentioned; thus pointing out the steps Of argument which others may easily follow. On this it may be remarked that the evidence of the witnesses is by no means weakened through the peculiar Opinions which any of them held. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: American Standard Edition It was necessary in telling this story to begin at the inception of the movement for Revision. Hence this little book repeats many facts that were published when, and immediately after, the Revised New Testa ment of 1881 appeared. But another gener ation has grown up since that date, and much well known to Biblical scholars will be new to most readers to - day. Yet, even in telling of the labors before 1881, the writer, from his connection with the American Company of New Testament Revisers, has been able to include many facts not known to the general public. The account of the preparation of the Standard Edition of the American Revised New Testament has never been published before, and the writer has found, from many letters of inquiry, that little is known about the details. The same inquiries indicate a desire to learn the facts as here briefly presented. Thirty-five years have passed since the work began, and this sketch has been penned in the desire and hope of making these long years of labor.
