Download or read book New Age in Latin America written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is at the crossroads where a New Age sensibility, advancing like an ecumen of worldwide spirituality without national, cultural, or ecclesiastical frontiers, meets Latin America's syncretic religions, practiced by groups of people wiht African or indigenous roots or developed from the tradition of popular Catholicism. The Syncretic character of the two sensibilities makes both the New Age and popular religion behave like two, syncretizing and syncreticizable matrices of meaning. This book opens up a rich vein of debate with new dilemmas and discussions, that will provide a framework for a new field of study in anthropology. What new ways of signifying living and experiencing religion is the New Age generating in Latin America? What are its limits? Download or read book On the Edge of Purgatory written by Bonnie J. Clark and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeastern Colorado was known as the northernmost boundary of New Spain in the sixteenth century. By the late 1800s, the region was U.S. territory, but the majority of settlers remained Hispanic families. They had a complex history of interaction with indigenous populations in the area and adopted many of the indigenous methods of survival in this difficult environment. Today their descendants compose a vocal part of the Hispanic population of Colorado. Bonnie J. Clark investigates the unwritten history of this unique Hispanic population. Combining archaeological research, contemporary ethnography, and oral and documentary history, Clark examines the everyday lives of this population over time. Framing this discussion within the wider context of the changing economic and political processes at work, Clark looks at how changing and contesting ethnic and gender identities were experienced on a daily basis. Providing new insights into the construction of ethnic identity in the American West over hundreds of years, this study complicates and enriches our understanding of the role of Hispanic populations in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first two decades of the nineteenth century a new provenance in the local production of religious art emerged in New Mexico, stemming from the parish of Santa Fe. In that period four notable santeros (escultores) of New Mexico's golden age of Spanish colonial art grew into maturity in Santa Fe and became sought after masters of locally created devotional art. Among their associates were carpenters of the previous and contemporary generations. A web of influence emerges from a study of family, occupations, and community in the social and religious lives of Jose Aragon, Jose Rafael Aragon, Jose Anastacio Casados, and Jose Manuel Benavides (a.k.a. Santo Nino Santero), escultores of the first half of nineteenth-century New Mexico. This book reveals the pattern of social relationships that connected these escultores with several families of carpenters through kinship, compadrazgo, and social occupations. These interrelations formed a tapestry of kinship that underscored the outburst of creativity in the production of religious devotional art among Nuevomejicanos. The breakthrough research of this book identifies a style of bultos attributed to Jose Anastacio Casados and highlights the familial relationship between Jose Aragon and Jose Rafael Aragon. Also, the identification of potential mentors of the escultores of the parish of Santa Fe opens a new chapter in the study of the classic period of New Mexican Catholic devotional art.
