Book Historical Congregationalism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Congregationalism Classic Reprint written by Samuel N. Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Congregationalism While the first lines of Historical Congregationalism date from recent centuries, we claim that its principles are as old as Chris tianity; nay, more, that it is the ancient Theocracy. With a divinely modified administration. As Congregationalists, we believe, not only in the supreme authority of God's Word, but also in its completeness as a divine revelation and find in it our only rule of faith, and also the constitution and laws of the Church of Christ, which in our view becomes' a church of churches. It was only by a study of the Sacred Word, that saintly and learned men, in various places and at different times, learned those principles which good seed, planted by the Holy Spirit in human hearts, has raised up a noble army of confessors, heroes and martyrs, and has girdled the world with their churches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Congregational History The following brief history of Congregationalism was written at the suggestion of the Rev. Robert West, the editor of The Advance, and was published in a series of articles in that paper. It was received with a degree of favor wholly unexpected by the author; and its publication in book form has been urgently called for by many esteemed brethren more competent than he to judge of its probable utility. Its scope and purpose may be easily stated. It reports no newly discovered facts, and no new exploration of the original sources of history, but aims to present, in condensed form, some of the more important results of scholarship in this field of study. Fortunately for our denomination, we have no lack of such scholarship. All that splendid erudition, critical acumen, and lifelong patience and application could do for the preservation of every discoverable detail of our history, has been done. But the very richness of the field has made it inaccessible. The most valuable books upon the subject are so voluminous and so costly that many pastors can not, and most laymen will not, purchase or peruse them. Book A History of the Congregational Churches

Download or read book A History of the Congregational Churches written by Williston Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Congregational Churches: In the United States The great teachers of the medieval church had uniformly held that the Bible is the ultimate source of religious au thority. But it was not the Bible interpreted by the in dividual. No thought fundamental to the Roman Empire had been more impressed on the minds of men than that of visible, external unity-a unity finding expression in a uniform system of government, a uniform body of law, and a visible, earthly head. This great Roman imperial con ception had produced the medieval papacy; it produced also in the political world the far less efficient, but no less assertive, Holy Roman Empire. For such a body, char acterized by such external marks of unity, an authorita tive exposition of that which it claimed as its fundamental law, the Bible, was imperatively necessary. That expo sitiou was believed to be set forth by the church itself, speaking through tradition, the consensus of its fathers and doctors, the decrees of its popes, and especially through general councils. All these made a mass of authority which, though professedly subordinate to the Word of God and merely interpretative of it, really, if not theoret ically, put it in the background; and substituted for a direct appeal to its prescriptions, a mass of exposition, the slow growth of centuries, which buttressed an elaborate sys tem of doctrine, polity, and ceremonial. Itself the result of gradual accretion through nearly a millennium and a half of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of Congregationalism

Download or read book History of Congregationalism written by George Punchard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Congregationalism: From About A. D. 250 to 1616 This volume contains the history of Congregationalism from about A. D. 250 to 1616. Much of it, consequently, is occupied with the history of the principles and doctrines now embraced by the denomination, rather than by the his tory of Congregationalists themselves. Though as a de nomination, we had no distinctive, organized existence um til near the close of the sixteenth century yet, inasmuch as some of our denominational peculiarities have always found advocates and friends, since the days of the apostles, - a very imperfect notion could be formed of our history, if these facts were entirely overlooked. But, in order to bring them out, it has been necessary to travel over a very extensive field of observation, and to introduce more of gen eral history than, at first thought, may seem strictly proper in a denominational work. The sources whence this history has been drawn, will sufficiently appear by reference to the margin. Original authorities have been appealed to whenever they have been within my reach and when they have not, the defect has been, in part at least, supplied, by comparing several second-hand authorities, and when it was possible, men of different views and habits of thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Congregationalism The scope of this little book on "Congregationalism" has been, necessarily, limited by the purpose of the series to which it belongs. It does not pretend to be a history of Congregationalism, and the writer makes no claim to originality of treatment; there has been no attempt to consult original documents. The publishers, in this series on "Varieties of the Christian Faith," aim at presenting a brief account of each particular "variety" in such a form as shall appeal to the general reader who desires to inform himself of the main principles and historical setting, of the origin and development of the various sections into which the Christian Church is at present divided, with some indication of the place which each fills in modern life, its achievements in the past, and its outlook for the future. Book The National Council of Congregational Churches of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The National Council of Congregational Churches of the United States Classic Reprint written by Edmund Lyman Hood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Council of Congregational Churches of the United States In the memorable trip over sea in July, 1891, on the fated "City of Chicago," which bore the delegates of America to the First International Council in London, it was my good fortune to occupy a stateroom with Rev. Alonzo H. Quint. This privilege gave much time for happy converse, which was especially valuable to me, a young man. The polity of the Congregational Churches was our favorite theme. And with the great meeting, to which we both journeyed as delegates, before us, it was natural that the Council, its history and function, should have been uppermost in our minds. One day, he turned and said in his emphatic way, "You should write a history of the National Council." My work as Missionary Superintendent for several years in the West had indeed kept the polity of the churches ever before me. The genial doctor's request was not forgotten. With each recurring session since, articles have been prepared by request for our acknowledged denominational journals, which have received far greater commendation than their merit deserved. At the last session, a pamphlet was prepared; and, though a considerable edition was printed, it was immediately exhausted. Requests came from men whose judgment commands respect, in different parts of the country, that the treatise be amplified. The present monograph is the result. It has been my purpose to tell the history of the Council as much as possible in the language of its own decisions and acts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Congregationalism The Congregational system has now stood the tests and trials of more than three centuries, and the world has been made to share the benefits of the fruit it has borne. The more its adherents learn of its origin, history and work, the greater will they prize its precious and apostolic principles. Should this volume contribute to such an object the author will consider it a rich reward. The writer and compiler of this book does not lay special claim to originality, for the facts set forth are gathered from many sources. It is manifestly impossible to give due credit to each historian and writer on these themes, therefore a general and grateful acknowledgment is made of most valuable aid derived from them all. Book History of English Congregationalism Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of English Congregationalism Classic Reprint written by Robert William Dale and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Congregationalism Not very long before his death, my father spoke to me of the work that he was leaving unfinished, and said that he wished his History of English Congregationalism to be published, if it could be done. How the book was first planned, and how the plan was altered, has been told elsewhere, and there is no need to repeat the story. The book began as a manual; but it grew in size and scope - as books are apt to grow; and it would not be compressed into a couple of hundred pages. It was to have been written for the Congregational Union; but the author preferred to speak for himself, free from all responsibility to others. During the later years of his life he gave to the task what strength and leisure were left him. Much of the ground to be traversed was already familiar. Church history, and the history of the Congregational Churches in particular, had been his lifelong study. The earliest of his public utterances to attract attention had dealt with the Ejection of 1662. And in the years that followed - the period of energy and strength - he had set himself to revive and to enforce the theory of the Church on which the Congregational polity is built. Book American Congregational Year Book for the Year 1856 Vol 3 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Congregational Year Book, for the Year 1856, Vol. 3 One department of the year-book which ought to be greatly enlarged has been in the present volume reluctantly but necessarily contracted, -the presentation of elevations of new churches, with a condensed history of their origin and present condition. To procure suitable engravings would add too much to the cost of the year-book, - but if individuals or churches will supply such views and histories, it would greatly increase the useful ness of the year-book to churches about to erect houses of worship and be a public benefit by improving our church architecture. Special attention is directed to the valuable extracts from the address of President Sturtevant, delivered at the annual meeting of the Union; and from Dr. Bacon's article in the New Englander on Presbyterianism. They are inserted because peculiarly appropriate to passing events. Although the year-book falls far short of the ideal which the Editor has of such a volume, he trusts the volumes which have been issued during his official connection with the Union will prepare the way in a more complete series to be prepared by his successors in office. He now te turns to the much loved duties of the Pastoral office, with the h0pe that the American Congregational Union will very greatly enlarge its opera tions, and be the means of uniting more closely the far spread churches of our land, and that the year-book will increasingly become the annual his tory of the churches, ministry; educational institutions and literature of the Congregational body. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pocket Manual of Congregationalism Our peace was disturbed also by another change, the separation of church and state in New England. The Cambridge Platform, 1648, rested its discipline ultimately on the coercive power of the magistrate, as its last chapter shows; and to that power there were sad but frequent appeals. This very citadel soon crumbled into ruins, but no other defence was erected in its place, except in Connecticut (see my article in the New Englander, 1883, 461-491, on Some Neglected Factors in Congregational Fellowship. And so con fusion arose. We tried to make occasional councils conserve purity where our fathers relied on the coercive power of the magistrate. The attempt was. Not a complete success.
