This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Vol. 1 Herc now this people lived peaceably for several years without preachers or magistrates. Each one did as he thought proper. About this time I became very sick and expected to die, and was willing to die, for my stepmother was indeed a stepmother to me. By her influence my father treated me very harshly; I had no other friend, and had to bear hunger and cold. I often thought of running away, but the sickness mentioned put a bit in my mouth; I was bound as if by a rope to remain with my father to obey him. I have already mentioned that my father was a widower when he left Germany, and landed in 1710 with eight children, in New York, where my two brothers, George Frederick and Christopher were bound by the Governor, with my then sick father's consent, over to Long Island. The following winter my youngest brother, John Frederick, died in the sixth year of his age, and was buried in Livingston's bush, as the expression then was, and was the first one buried where new the Reformed Church in Weisers - dorf stands. In the year 1711 my father married my stepmother, whom I have mentioned above. It was an unhappy match, and was the cause of my brothers and sisters' all becoming scattered. At last I was the only one left at home, except the three children he had by my stepmother, viz., John Frederick, Jacob, and Rebecca. Everything went crab-fashion; one misfortune after another happened to our family, of which I always was partaker. I frequently did not know where to turn, and learned to pray to God, and his word became my most agreeable reading. Book A History of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by Thomas Stone March and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Pennsylvania Local history has an appeal not easily found in works covering a larger sphere. In this book an effort has been made so to present the subject as to lead the pupil to a better understanding of our national history. Hence special emphasis has been laid upon the various incidents in the life of the nation which have taken place in Pennsylvania. To make these relations clear to the pupil it has often been necessary to mention events which have occurred in other states. This plan has been followed in the hope that this book may be used as an introduction to, and in connection with, a study of the history of the United States. In the arrangement of materials, the topical method of treat ment has been employed. This has occasionally brought events out of their chronological order. This was done to make the relation of events clear to pupils. In addition it was thought that detached descriptions of incidents have a tendency to form the bad habit of committing history to memory, whereas a logical arrangement encourages a correct method of study. Book The State Works of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book The State Works of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by Avard Longley Bishop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State Works of Pennsylvania What is known technically in the history of Pennsylvania as the state works comprised a system of transportation which was built, owned and operated by the commonwealth. Public works and internal improvements are other names commonly applied to the system. The writer has, therefore, used these three terms interchangeably. The popular movement for the state itself to provide an adequate means Of transportation to the growing West may be said to have commenced in Pennsylvania in 1823. The work of construction was undertaken in 1826 and within a few years an extensive sys tem Of canals and railways was built and in operation. By 1859, however, there was not a single mile of public-owned canal or railway in the commonwealth. It is thus seen that the present study is limited to a definite field which furnishes an historical example Of public ownership and control of a transportation system. Book History of the Province of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Province of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by Samuel Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Province of Pennsylvania The History of the Province of Pennsylvania has been printed from Samuel Smith's manuscript in the library of The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. As an examination of his history of New Jersey indicates, this manuscript would have been carefully edited by the author before publication, but it has been deemed best to follow the orthography and punctuation of the original. The author divided his work into two parts, of which this is the first. The second part contains: The introduction, and some account of the religious progress of the people called Quakers therein, [Pennsylvania] including the like account respecting the same people in New Jersey, as constituting one yearly meeting. This second portion was printed by Samuel Hazard in The Register of Pennsylvania, Volumes VI and VII, 1830-1831, with the exception of Chapters XVI and XVII, which were omitted as they contain nothing but a letter from Elizabeth Webb, giving an account of her religious experience, to Dr. Boehm, and his reply, both of which have we understand been published in a pamphlet; and as directions are likewise given to the transcriber of Smith's Ms. to omit copying them. Samuel Smith, the author of The History of the Province of Pennsylvania, was of Quaker stock, the great-grandson of Richard Smith of Bramham in the West Riding of Yorkshire, one of the original proprietaries of West Jersey and a signer of The Concessions and Agreements of the Proprietors, Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Province of West New Jersey, in America, 1676. He had by his wife Anne Yeates, Samuel Smith of Bramham, who settled in West Jersey in 1694, married Elizabeth Lovett, and was a member of the General Assembly for several years.
