Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections, 1905, Vol. 34: Collections and Researches Made by the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society Some of the old documents obtained by Levi Bishop in the early days of this Society, in whose behalf he was an earnest worker, have been copied, as they present certain details of Cadillac's life and public career. The first land grants in Detroit appear in this volume, and a. Remarkable thing connected with them is that most of the present boundaries are the same as they were then. Sales of considerable Detroit property are mentioned in the Cadillac records collected by Mr. Burton from the archives in Quebec. The Montreal papers were copied from the originals. Loaned by Father J ones of St. Marie's College, Montreal, and they verify some of the early Cadillac records. Book Madame Montour and the Fur Trade 1667 1752

Download or read book Madame Montour and the Fur Trade 1667 1752 written by Simone Vincens and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating biography, Madame Montour et son temps by Simone Vincens, is now available in English under the title of Madame Montour and the Fur Trade (1667-1752). This book, which gives a French perspective to events, is a beautifully written and thoroughly researched account of an extraordinary woman as well as a unique presentation of events leading up to the French and Indian War. The main theme of the book is the life of Isabelle Montour (1667-1752). This adventurous, self-reliant woman was the daughter of a French soldier and an Algonkin mother. The first third of her life was spent as a member of the French colony on the St. Lawrence River, the second third she lived on the fringes of French and Ottawan societies at the western outposts of Michilimackinac and Detroit, and the final third she lived as an Iroquois in the provinces of New York and Pennsylvania. Isabelle was fluent in several Indian languages as well as French and English; she became an influential interpreter-diplomat for the governors of New York and Pennsylvania. Much of her life was devoted to improving relations between Indians and Europeans. As Madame Montour’s extraordinary life unfolds, we learn about European-Indian relations during the century leading up to the French and Indian War. This well-referenced history, told with drama and detail, covers the French-Iroquois hostilities on the Saint Lawrence River, the fur-trade center at Fort Michilimackinac, the political turmoil at Detroit, the immigration of western tribes into New York province, and the growing conflict between Pennsylvania merchants and French soldiers in the Ohio Valley. Isabelle Montour was involved in all these events.

Book The Court Martial of Captain John Armstrong

Download or read book The Court Martial of Captain John Armstrong written by Ellen Denning Smith and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-07-17 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Armstrong was destined to be a humble farmer on the Pennsylvania frontier until the American Revolution changed his life. Rising from private soldier to an officer in the Continental Army, he later served in the First American Regiment, foreruner of the U.S. Army, that was tasked to facilitate the settlement of the Northwest Territory. He endured the fledgling army’s growing pains, was selected for a covert operation in Spanish territory to explore the Missouri River, and fought Native Americans in two disastrous military campaigns. The army subsequently evolved into a successful fighting force despite its second-in-command’s quest to destroy the career of its commander, Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne. Armstrong became an unwitting pawn in a treacherous game crafted by Brig. Gen. James Wilkinson, of whom Theodore Roosevelt once wrote, “He had no conscience and no scruples . . . In all our history there is no more despicable character.” Rebuilding his life in Ohio and Indiana, Armstrong became a noted government official, militia officer, land speculator, and pioneer.
