This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Catalogue of the Members of the First Church of Christ in New Haven, Connecticut (Center Church): A. D. 1639-1914 Public worship was set up in New Haven in 1638, and the First Church of Christ was organized in 1639. The earliest extant record of admissions begins in 1685. Dis missions are first recorded in 1812, though for many years after that date with much irregularity. From the record of baptisms, the town records, and other sources, a partial list of members before 1685 has been made, though necessarily incomplete; in this list names are assigned, conjecturally, to the dates of the earliest known intimations of membership. The prefix c indicates that a person was received by certificate from another church; in cases of the admission of a husband and wife at the same date, details are given in full under the husband's name only. While he claimed to be an Edwardsian Calvinist, very few people believed him. This book attempts to understand how Taylor and his associates could have counted themselves Edwardsians. In the process, it explores what it meant to be an Edwardsian minister and intellectual in the 19th century.

Book American Congregations Volume 1

Download or read book American Congregations Volume 1 written by James P. Wind and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The congregation is a distinctly American religious structure, and is often overlooked in traditional studies of religion. But one cannot understand American religion without understanding the congregation. Volume 1: Portraits of Twelve Religious Communities chronicles the founding, growth, and development of congregations that represent the diverse and complex reality of American local religious cultures. The contributors explore multiple issues, from the fate of American Protestantism to the rise of charismatic revivalism. Volume 2: New Perspectives in the Study of Congregations builds upon those historical studies, and addresses three crucial questions: Where is the congregation located on the broader map of American cultural and religious life? What are congregations' distinctive qualities, tasks, and roles in American culture? And, what patterns of leadership characterize congregations in America?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at how slavery and resistance to it have shaped Yale University Award-winning historian David W. Blight, with the Yale and Slavery Research Project, answers the call to investigate Yale University’s historical involvement with slavery, the slave trade, and abolition. This narrative history demonstrates the importance of slavery in the making of this renowned American institution of higher learning. Drawing on wide-ranging archival materials, Yale and Slavery extends from the century before the college’s founding in 1701 to the dedication of its Civil War memorial in 1915, while engaging with the legacies and remembrance of this complex story. The book brings into focus the enslaved and free Black people who have been part of Yale’s history from the beginning—but too often ignored in official accounts. These individuals and their descendants worked at Yale; petitioned and fought for freedom and dignity; built churches, schools, and antislavery organizations; and were among the first Black students to transform the university from the inside. Always alive to the surprises and ironies of the past, Yale and Slavery presents a richer and more complete history of Yale, the third-oldest college in the country, showing how pillars of American higher education, even in New England, emerged over time intertwined with the national and international history of racial slavery.
