Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Nebraska was originally created to mark the territorial centennial of Nebraska and then revised to coincide with the statehood centennial. This one-volume history quickly became the standard text for the college student and reference for the general reader, unmatched for generations as the only comprehensive history of the state. This fourth edition, revised and updated, preserves the spirit and intelligence of the original. Incorporating the results of years of scholarship and research, this edition gives fuller attention to such topics as the Native American experience in Nebraska and the accomplishments and circumstances of the state’s women and minorities. It also provides a historical analysis of the state’s dramatic changes in the past two decades.

Excerpt from book: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF MAJOR W. W. DENNISON. By I. A. Fort. William Wallace Dennison was born at Saybrook, Conn., April 20,1822, and received his education at Yale. He was descended from a noble English family, a branch of which, emigrating from the parent country, settled in Connecticut about the beginning of the last century. The greater part of his life was spent in government service, particularly that branch of it known as the Indian department. In 1857 he was appointed by President Pierce United States agent to the Pawnee, Otoe, and Missouri tribes of Indians, with headquarters at Nebraska City, which was then in its infancy. Enterprising and public spirited, Major Dennison, together with other kindred spirits, did all in his pdwer to invite immigration into the territory and to further in every way the interests of the growing colony at Nebraska City. Through his instrumentality the Indians under his control and over whom he exercised a most beneficent influence were instructed in the useful arts of civilization and also taught how to live on friendly terms with other Indian tribes, as also with their white neighbors. Treaties greatly to their advantage were, through Major Dennison's influence, concluded with the government, the articles of which were rigidly enforced by him, to the great advancement of the Indians. In 1859 his friends induced him to stand as democratic nominee for congress, but he was defeated by the republican candidate. During the fall of 1860, his health failing notably, he was advised to try a southern climate for its restoration, in pursuance of which advice he sent in to the Indian department his resignation as agent, and was preparing to proceed with his family to Virginia when the civil war broke upon the country. Book excerpt: A moving true story of American struggle. Royal, Nebraska, population eighty-one-where the church, high school, and post office each stand abandoned, monuments to a Great Plains town that never flourished. But for nearly twenty years, they had a zoo, seven acres that rose from local peculiarity to key tourist attraction to devastating tragedy. And it all began with one man's outsize vision. When Dick Haskin's plans to assist primatologist Dian Fossey in Rwanda were cut short by her murder, Dick's devotion to primates didn't die with her. He returned to his hometown with Reuben, an adolescent chimp, in the bed of a pickup truck and transformed a trailer home into the Midwest Primate Center. As the tourist trade multiplied, so did the inhabitants of what would become Zoo Nebraska, the unlikeliest boon to Royal's economy in generations and, eventually, the source of a power struggle that would lead to the tragic implosion of Dick Haskin's dream. A resonant true story of small-town politics and community perseverance and of decent people and questionable choices, Zoo Nebraska is a timely requiem for a rural America in the throes of extinction.

Book Semi Centennial History of Nebraska

Download or read book Semi Centennial History of Nebraska written by Addison Erwin Sheldon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Centennial History of Nebraska: Historical Sketch Touching the history of the world fifty years is but a short stroke of the pendulum, yet what marvelous achievements are wrought during that fleeting swing of time! The purpose of this volume is to review the development of. A great commonwealth, Nebraska, at the close of her semi-centennial, and to recount the principal incidents preparatory to Statehood. For the successful execution of the purpose outlined it has been our good fortune - and that of the reader as well, - to secure the services of Prof. A. E. Sheldon, A. M.. Whose elaborate investigations and extensive study of the history of Nebraska, have eminently qualified him for the task. Supplementary to this historical sketch, and realizing that the best aid to comprehension is comparison, we have sought to assist by a comparative showing, the reader's appreciation of the remarkable progress of a pioneer people. As such accomplishments are attained only through the activities of a sturdy race it is therefore assumed that a history conforming to the needs of the busy life is most essential. -with this thought the main points in the state's history are presented, and comparative illustrations of her resources and industries shown. Many of the illustrations have been made for special use in this history and are published for the first time. To the heroic, progressive Nebraskan this work is sincerely dedicated. Frank L. Lemon.
