Book The Evolution of Reproductive Isolation in Daphnia

Download or read book The Evolution of Reproductive Isolation in Daphnia written by Tiffany Chin and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The process of speciation has fascinated biologist for centuries and stimulated the research of reproductive isolation and the evolutionary forces responsible for cladogenesis. Reproductive isolation studies often look at the current barriers that restrict gene flow between species to determine which barriers are important in maintaining species boundaries. On the other hand, studies of cladogenesis examine historical events in speciation. The two approaches are complementary in the understanding of current and historical patterns that shape the speciation process. This thesis examines the process of speciation in Daphnia and the evolutionary forces associated with the splitting of species, by quantifying reproductive isolating barriers and using a phylogenomics context. In Chapter 2, I review the literature and synthesize the current knowledge of the mechanisms of speciation in the Daphnia genus, highlighting the roles of geography, ecology, and biology in species diversification as well as identifying important areas of future research. In Chapter 3, I examine the strengths of prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive isolating barriers between two closely related species, Daphnia pulex and Daphnia pulicaria. In Chapters 4 and 5, I utilize a phylogenomic approach to examine species diversification and the evolutionary forces associated with speciation of the genus Daphnia. Specifically, in Chapter 4, I reconstruct the evolutionary history of this diverse genus using whole-genome sequencing data and examine the role of geography and ecology in promoting speciation. Furthermore, in Chapter 5, I examine the role of hybridization in speciation within the two diverse species complexes, D. pulex and Daphnia longispina, which are known to exhibit frequent hybridization. By using a combinatorial approach, this thesis provides an evolutionary perspective from historical to current evolutionary events which furthers the understanding of the process of speciation"--

Book excerpt: The past 25 years have witnessed a revolution in the way ecologists and evolutionary biologists approach their disciplines. Modern molecular techniques are now reshaping the spectrum of questions that can be addressed while studying the mechanisms and consequences of the ecology and evolution of living organisms. "Molecular Ecology and Evolution: Approaches and Applications" describes, from a molecular perspective, several methodological and technical approaches used in the fields of ecology, evolution, population biology, molecular systematics, conservation genetics, and development. Modern techniques are introduced, and older, more classic ones refined. The advantages, limitations, and potentials of each are discussed in detail, and thereby illustrate the widening range of cross-field research and applications which this modern technology is stimulating. This book will serve as an important textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and as a key reference work for researchers

  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Comparative Biogeography written by Lynne Parenti and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009-11-18 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To unravel the complex shared history of the Earth and its life forms, biogeographers analyze patterns of biodiversity, species distribution, and geological history. So far, the field of biogeography has been fragmented into divergent systematic and evolutionary approaches, with no overarching or unifying research theme or method. In this text, Lynne Parenti and Malte Ebach address this discord and outline comparative tools to unify biogeography. Rooted in phylogenetic systematics, this comparative biogeographic approach offers a comprehensive empirical framework for discovering and deciphering the patterns and processes of the distribution of life on Earth. The authors cover biogeography from its fundamental ideas to the most effective ways to implement them. Real-life examples illustrate concepts and problems, including the first comparative biogeographical analysis of the Indo-West Pacific, an introduction to biogeographical concepts rooted in the earth sciences, and the integration of phylogeny, evolution and earth history.

Book Evolution and Environment in Tropical America

Download or read book Evolution and Environment in Tropical America written by Jeremy B. C. Jackson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-12-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were the tropical Americas formed? This ambitious volume draws on extensive, multidisciplinary research to develop new views of the geological formation of the isthmus linking North and South America and of the major environmental changes that reshaped the Neotropics to create its present-day marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Recent discoveries show that dramatic changes in climate and ocean circulation can occur very quickly, and that ecological communities respond just as rapidly. Abrupt changes in the composition of fossil assemblages, formerly dismissed as artifacts of a poor fossil record, now are seen as accurate records of swift changes in the composition of ocean communities. The twenty-four contributors use current work in paleontology, geology, oceanography, anthropology, ecology, and evolution to paint this challenging portrait of rapid environmental and evolutionary change. Their conclusions argue for a revision of existing interpretations of the fossil record and the processes—including invading Eurasian peoples—that have produced it.

Book Global Ecological Consequences of the 1982 83 El Ni o Southern Oscillation

Download or read book Global Ecological Consequences of the 1982 83 El Ni o Southern Oscillation written by P.W. Glynn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-09-06 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Niño is a meteorologic/oceanographic phenomenon that occurs sporadically (every few years) at low latitudes. It is felt particularly strongly in the eastern Pacific region, notably from the equator southwards along the coasts of Ecuador and Peru. The El Niño is a component of the ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) which accentuates the intimate and causal connection between atmospheric and marine processes. Obvious manifestations of El Niño in the eastern Pacific are anomalous warming of the sea; reduced upwelling; a marked decline in fisheries, and high rainfall with frequent flooding. The 1982/83 El Niño was exceptionally severe, and was probably the strongest warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean to occur during this century. The warming was intense and spread over large parts of the Pacific Ocean and penetrated to greater depths than usual. Many eastern Pacific coral reefs that had exhibited uninterrupted growth for several hundred years until 1983 were devasted by the disturbance and are now in an erosional mode. Marine species were adversely affected. The consequent depletion of the plant food base resulted in significant reductions in stocks of fish, squid etc. This led to a mass migration and near-total reproductive failure of marine birds at Christmas Island.Emphasis in this volume is placed on disturbances to benthic communities; littoral populations; terrestrial communities and extratropical regions.
