Book Historical Address and Appendix Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Address and Appendix Classic Reprint written by H. P. Hedges and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Address and Appendix Friends of Bridge-Hampton: - The largest of all the pioneer waves that rolled over this Continent was the Puritan, striking Plymouth Rock; it swelled in majestic momentum, moving to all points until movement became part of its very nature. The swing of the Pilgrim axe, year by year grew wider. The genius of tlie Puritan was constructive and self-reliant. Puritan colonies from the first were substantially self governed. Very early they declared to the world that Governments are instituted among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. But long, long years before this, the Puritan had disowned all ecclesiastical subjection to Priest or Hierarch, and insisted on the right of the people to organize and govern a church for themselves. They declared for "a church without a Bishop," long before they declared for "a State without a King." Substantially they defined a church as "A company of believers in Christ associated together for the Public worship of God, for the observance of Christian ordinances, and for mutual aid and encouragement in all Christian duties." They believed the powers of church government inhered in the people as afterwards that the powers of Civil government so inhered. Both in Church and State, developed last in the latter, was the Puritan ideal that power to organize and govern churches and communities rightfully sprang from the people. Book An Address to the Public

Download or read book An Address to the Public written by Colonization Society of the Connecticut and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to the Public: With an Appendix We ask your contributions. A subscriber of thirty dollars at one time becomes a member for life of the National Society. The payment of ten dollars at one time, or of one dollar annually is the condition of membership in this auxiliary. How many men are there in Connecticut who might, without material in convenience to themselves, and without subtracting any thing from their ordinary charities, -constitute themselves life members of the parent institution? How many more who might with equal ease become either annual or life subscribers to the Con necticut Society? How many ministers of every denomination might be constituted members of the National or State Society, by the benefactions of their people? In which of our towns or villages might not the exertions of a few spirited individuals secure a public contribution to this great national object, on the anniversary of our independence? There are in this State one hundred and twenty-nine incorporated towns. If the average amount of only thirty dollars could be raised annually among the citizens of each of these towns, it would send nearly four thousand dollars every year to diminish the yearly increasing pressure of the greatest curse which rests upon this nation, and to build up the institutions of freedom and intelligence and piety on a continent over which darkness and misery have brooded for uncounted generations. Book An Address Delivered at the Opening of the Town Hall in Springfield March 24 1828

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address, Delivered at the Opening of the Town-Hall in Springfield, March 24, 1828: Containing Sketches of the Early History of That Town, and Those in Its Vicinity, With an Appendix Our assembling this day, in this Hall, is a subject for mutual congratulation. That the town has, with so much unanimity and concord, undertaken and completed a building, so convenient for the transaction of public business, evinces in the inhabitants, a spirit of liberality and harmony, highly honorable to our society. This building, so ornamental to the place, has been completed, without accident and without contention. The occasion suggested a wish to have an historical account of the town. Such a history will, probably, be peculiarly interesting to the inhabitants; but it is also important to the community in general. This was the earliest settlement, in the western part of the state, and itself the parent of many others. It was a colony from the settlements about Massachusetts Bay, begun and carried on while those settlements were yet in infancy. It was an important post against the Indians; and being adjacent to Connecticut, and the only town bordering on that colony, it was long involved in great and violent disputes with that government. The means of compiling such an account are not over ample; but some care has been taken to collect what remains. Many facts now known, may soon be lost; many which might have been found half a century ago, are now irrecoverably gone. Very few traces of the ecclesiastical history of the town can be found. Several of those who were here at the first settlement, came from England, when the governor and company came over, in the year 1630. How many I am unable to ascertain. William Pynchon, Esq. who may properly be called the father of the town, was one of the patentees in the colony charter, named on the deed of 1627, and the charter of 1628.
