Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Towns of the Western States In presenting to the reading public this fourth volume in the series of Historic Towns, a volume which brings the series to a close, it is in order for the editor to call attention to the necessarily large measure of liberty accorded to the contributors in their treatment of the records of the several towns. With several of his co-laborers the editor has on one point or another found himself at variance. Examples of such difference of conclusions are presented in the references to the Mormons and to the Mound-builders. The editor bears in mind, however, the essential difference between editorial responsibilities and those belonging to the writers of the papers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Towns of New England I had planned in the months that followed to publish a souvenir volume containing the more important addresses made by distinguished men on the historic significance of the places visited; but as the happy experience receded into the past a larger thought laid hold of me. Why not sometime in the infrequent leisure of a busy minister's life edit a series of volumes on American Historic T owns 9 Kingsley's novels were written amid parish duties, and Dr. Mccook has found time, amid exacting ministerial duties, to make perhaps the most searching study ever made by an American of the habits of spiders. Medical experts agree concerning the value of a wholesome avoca tion to the man who takes his vocation seri ously; and congregations are quick to give ear to the earnest preacher whose sermons be tray a large outlook on life. Book Historic Towns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historic Towns Classic Reprint written by Edward A. Freeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Towns I have endeavoured to acknowledge the authorities chiefly consulted in their places, and in so small a treatise on so great a subj ect have inserted no footnotes or appendix of original documents. The reader who wishes to search further into the questions here started should consult, before all other books, the N inth Report of the Historical mss. Commission, where he will find Mr. Maxwell Lyte's Calendar of the Documents of St. Paul's; and the Report of the Commission appointed in 1 854 to inquire into the State of the Corporation. Applying to the evidence detailed in these Blue Books the knowledge of the laws and history of England to be derived from the works of the great constitutional historians, the student will have little difficulty in sepa ratin g the wheat from the chaff; and it is my fervent hope that, before long, the history of London, in spite of all that has been written about it, will be as easily understood as the history of any other town. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Town How small this world of ours is, and how close we are, all unknowing, to one another! I had set out to write the story of the Old Town with no thought that it touched the land across the seas and its people in any closer way than through these pages, and through the abiding affection of a few of its children who, like myself, have wandered far from home. And while I wrote there fell into my hands the account Of a sale of some building lots half a dozen years ago, in Jersey City, part of a property which for three hundred years had belonged to the Van Riepen family. And the Van Riepen name was shown to mean from Ribe the Old Town itself. This is the historical record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Seaport Towns of the South But it wasn't until we were caught in the pie-shaped wedge of travellers at the ticket gate that We realised how irrevocable our going away was. And then we had a chilling sensa tion of exile, as if we were leaving all the things we liked best - friends, fun, work, New York and were not going to find anything to take their place. That is the worst of being a New Yorker; like a breathless joy-rider in a scenic railway car, you shut your eyes and shriek, Oh, isn't it fun! There's nothing like it in the world! Forgetting that beyond the wall of glittering towers, across the moat of rivers, there are cities and people, great activities and amaz ing beauty. Not only the ashes of cities and people, but the living heart of them, the rest of America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Historical Data Relating to Counties Cities and Towns in Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Data Relating to Counties, Cities and Towns in Massachusetts In colonial and provincial times in Massachusetts groups of individuals within clearly defined areas, not strong enough to become a town, were often established by law as townships and districts, without certain town privileges, as the power of choosing Representatives, etc. Chapter 3 of the Acts of 1775 (section 3), passed Aug. 23, 1775, declared "that every corporate body in this colony which in the act for the incorporation thereof is said and declared to be made a district, and has, by such act, granted to it, or is declared to be vested with, the rights, powers, priviledges or immunities of a town, with the exception above mentioned of chusing and sending a representative to the great and general court or assembly, shall henceforth be, and shall be holden, taken and intended to be, a town to all intents and purposes whatsoever." (Prov. Laws, Vol. V, p. 420.) Since that time these. have been no districts or townships in the State. New towns set off from one or more towns are duly incorporated by law and their bounds fixed. Towns and cities may, of course, establish certain lines within their own areas as town and city limits (using the words in contradistinction to "country" or "outskirts") for the regulation of water, light or police service. These lines, however, would not properly be considered the corporate bounds of the town. "Towns . . . became in effect municipal or quasi corporations, without any formal act of incorporation." (122 Mass. p.349.) March 23, 1786. The inhabitants of every town within this government are hereby declaired to be a body politic and corporate. (Acts 1785, chap.75.) Nov. 4, 1835. "All places now incorporated as districts, except the district of Marshpee, in the county of Barnstable, shall have all the powers and privileges, and be subject to all the duties to which towns are entitled by the provisions of this chapter." (R.S. chap.15, sect.9.) The asterisk (*) following a date signifies that it is Old Style. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
