Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newport Newport community - have suffered a sensible de moralization Not hatred nor un charitableness has been the result of this contact with superior forces, but certainly envy has had a subtle influence, with the result that Newport has come to mean less to them and to others. The town is still - and may be in the future still more - an interesting place to spec ulate about as a New England town of excellent traditions and unequalled at tractions, but unquestionably it has lost something of its once very positive char acter through contact with ideals and ex amples by no means its own. Among the shop-keepers - especially among those whom recent changes in business meth ods have rather relegated to the business background - and among the householders on the streets leading from Thames Street to what used to be called the Hill, I am sure one would find an echo of such ajudgment. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 1166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Newport Historical Society, 1922, Vol. 39 The next step was the power water mill, first in a very primitive manner, derived from the Greek water mill. This simple little machine, with its horizontal wheel and devoid of gearing, under the designation of the Norse Mill, sur vives, in some places, to the present day. In the Greek water mill the/ wheel which lay vertically upon or in the water and revolved an upright central shaft standing on a stone in the bed of the stream or in a dry channel to which the water was conveyed by a trough, the upper end of the shaft or spindle passed through the lower of the two querns like grinding stones placed above, but was fixed to the upper stone. Thus the water wheel, the shaft and top stone all revolved together. This arrangement would grind very slowly, as one revolution of the water wheel would of course only produce one revolution of the grinding stone. This mill was generally to be found over the greater part of Europe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reminiscence of Newport Before the During the Revolutionary War These fragments have been gathered from the conversation of those who witnessed these events, and this must excuse the introduction of portraits of some of the most remarkable characters of those times. And yet what is history but a collection of portraits which like individual likenesses in historical paintings give life and interest to the canvasses? These recollections are many of them derived from the conversations of Mrs. Wanton, who delighted to gather her grand-children about her, and amuse them with stories of the past, that had all the charm of romance. Book History and Antiquities of the Newport Pagnell Hundreds Classic Reprint

Download or read book History and Antiquities of the Newport Pagnell Hundreds Classic Reprint written by Oliver Ratcliff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Antiquities of the Newport Pagnell Hundreds The editing of this volume has been a labour of love, recalling happy memories of the past. It is about forty years since I took up my residence in the historic Hundreds of Newport Pagnell, and I have never missed an opportunity of obtaining a local work, and making a note of matters I deemed of interest and importance. In the follow ing pages will be found the result of my gleanings. The task of history-writing bristles with pitfalls, and it is idle to suppose that there is no weak spot in this book for the critic to assail. But critics, if in the main less important than they affect to be, have their uses as advertising media, and while expressing that nothing which care and diligence could do to make this work perfect has been left undone, I beg to express a hope that the person who finds errors, and sets out to expose them, will do so as loudly as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip Across the Bay, And, Some Early Schools and Schoolmasters of Newport What is across the bay from Newport? Nowadays, any one will immediately say Jamestown. But in those days which I am trying to recall, we would have answered Conanicut! Because to us, Jamestown was a very insignificant part of an alluring wild island, holding limitless possibilities of adventure. But why should my father, Joseph Wharton, have moved from the comforts of Newport to the wild island of Conanicut? Perhaps I had better first explain why he moved each summer from Philadelphia to Newport. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
