Book Guide for Use of Wood Preservatives in Historic Structures

Download or read book Guide for Use of Wood Preservatives in Historic Structures written by Stan LeBow and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price Wood preservatives are generally grouped into two categories: preservatives used for in-place field (remedial)treatment and preservatives used for pressure treatments.A limitation of in-place treatments is that they cannot beforced deeply into the wood under pressure. However, theycan be applied into the center of large wooden membersvia treatment holes. These preservatives may be availableas liquids, rods, or pastes. Pressure-treated wood has muchdeeper and more uniform preservative penetration thanwood treated with other methods. The type of pressuretreated wood is often dependent on the requirements of thespecific application. To guide selection of pressure-treatedwood, the American Wood Protection Association developedUse Category System standards. Other preservative characteristics, such as color, odor, and surface oiliness may alsobe relevant. Guidelines for selection and application of fieldtreatments and for selection and specification of pressure-treated wood are provided in this document. Book Historic House Museums

Download or read book Historic House Museums written by Sherry Butcher-Younghans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic house museums can be found in nearly every city in the United States and Canada. These are the homes of the earliest settlers, statesmen, frontiersmen, great writers, artists, architects, and industrial magnates. These are the places, carefully saved and preserved, that represent a cultural heritage. Despite their popularity, it is not uncommon to find museums that are in poor repair, their collections neglected and their staffs grossly overworked. Many are run by well-meaning and hard-working volunteers who have little or no professional training. Often they survive on shoestring budgets and are able to present only limited programs. Serving both as a hands-on guide and reference, this book examines these problems, offering practical advice and solutions which can be easily implemented. Its useful "lessons" include governance, where to find help, care of collections, conservation, security, and interpretation--all designed to increase the professionalism of the historic house museum.

Book Inventories and Surveys for Heritage Management

Download or read book Inventories and Surveys for Heritage Management written by David Myers and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open-access publication provides essential guidance on digital inventories and surveys for the identification, conservation, and management of heritage places. A critical first step in the conservation of cultural heritage is to identify and understand the places we want to protect. Inventories and surveys are essential tools in this effort, and their use in managing national, regional, and local heritage is mandated in heritage-related legislation across the globe. Despite the widespread understanding of the importance of inventories and surveys, however, practical, up-to-date guidance on how they should be created, implemented, and maintained has been substantially lacking—until now. This publication draws from the Getty Conservation Institute’s ongoing work with heritage inventories and on the Los Angeles Office of Historic Resources’ experience with SurveyLA. It provides technical advice, guidance, and lessons learned for employing inventories and surveys as tools for heritage conservation and management. The free online edition of this open-access publication will be available at www.getty.edu/publications/inventories-and-surveys. Also available are free PDF and EPUB downloads of the book.
