Book Wyoming s Historic Ranches

Download or read book Wyoming s Historic Ranches written by Nancy Weidel and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wyoming is so closely identified with ranching that it is often known as the Cowboy State. The prosperity associated with the cattle industry drew wealthy investors to Wyoming Territory in the 1870s and early 1880s. They stocked the range with thousands of cows and made considerable fortunes until the harsh winter of 18861887, when the cattle market collapsed. Many of those early ranchers left Wyoming, which opened the door for the establishment of what would become a huge sheep business. During the 1890s and the early decades of the 20th century, the various Homestead Acts drew others to Wyoming in search of a brighter future. As most of Wyomings land was suited for grazing, not farming, smaller ranches began to play a more important role in the states growth. Wyomings Historic Ranches provides a rare glimpse of the cattle baron ranches as well as the more modest operations that are tucked away along remote valleys and streams, not visible to the average visitor or resident of the state.

Book Cowboy Life

Download or read book Cowboy Life written by George Philip and published by South Dakota State Historical Society. This book was released on 2007 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rattlesnakes and ornery horses, the dreaded Texas Itch, midnight rambles in graveyards, trips to Mexico, and hard riding on the last open range: George Philip recounts all these adventures and more with wit and humour. George Phillip arrived in South Dakota from Scotland in 1899. For the next four years, he rode as a cowboy for his uncle's L-7 cattle outfit during the heyday of the last open range. But the cowboy era was a brief one, and in 1903 Philip turned in his string of horses and hung up his saddle to enter law school in Michigan. In these candid letters, Philip provides fascinating insights into the development of the West and of South Dakota. His writing details the cowboy's day-to-day work, from branding and roping to navigating across the palins by stars and buttes, as the great open ranges slowly closed up.

Book Preserving the Great Plains Rocky Mountains

Download or read book Preserving the Great Plains Rocky Mountains written by Elaine Freed and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the end of the century, we are all too familiar with the look of modern America: the suburbs, the strip malls, the glass office towers, and especially in the West--the prevalence of urban sprawl. The area covered by this book includes New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, North and South Dakota, Illinois, Nebraska, and Wyoming, a vast and varied section of the country with remarkably diverse geography. Elaine Freed has covered huge amounts of territory to present this lively and well-illustrated study of the architecture and the preservation history of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain West. The book is divided into five sections. The first part focuses on the vernacular architecture of the region, the traditions of Native American and Spanish dwellings that Anglo settlers found, and the first makeshift, sometimes mobile structures they built, including trading posts, mills and mining camps, forts, and ranches. The author discusses the railroads and how they made possible the urbanization of the West, and how the automobile has altered the landscape. The second part focuses on historic preservation as an organized movement in the West, using different kinds of preservation to illustrate successes. There are chapters on farms and ranches, ghost towns, main streets, neighborhoods, and downtowns. For anyone concerned with preserving our environment and its architectural and archaeological history, this book is an indispensable guide.

Book Red Lodge and the Mythic West

Download or read book Red Lodge and the Mythic West written by Bonnie Christensen and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tracing the story of Red Lodge from the 1880s to the present, Christensen tells how a mining town managed to endure the vagaries of the West's unpredictable extractive-industries economy. She connects Red Lodge to a myriad of larger events and historical forces to show how national and regional influences have contributed to the development of local identities, exploring how and why westerners first rejected and then embraced "western" images, and how ethnicity, wilderness, and historic preservation became part of the identity that defined one town."--BOOK JACKET.
