Download or read book Preparing a Historic Preservation Plan written by Bradford J. White and published by American Planning Association. This book was released on 1994 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surge in local interest in historic preservation laws has been accompanied by a new wave of planning for the preservation and protection of historic resources. This report examines the 10 essential elements of a good preservation plan. The authors explain the legal justification for historic preservation and the pitfalls that one can encounter when drafting a plan. Case studies show how various communities have modified these elements to fit individual circumstances and needs. A look at Atlanta, for example, illustrates how that city was able to build a preservation planning consensus among preservationists and developers. The appendices include a summary of growth management laws in 11 states that shows how these laws address important historic preservation issues.

Download or read book Bending the Future written by Max Page and published by Public History in Historical P. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The year 2016 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, the cornerstone of historic preservation policy and practice in the United States. The act established the National Register of Historic Places, a national system of state preservation offices and local commissions, set up federal partnerships between states and tribes, and led to the formation of the standards for preservation and rehabilitation of historic structures. This book marks its fiftieth anniversary by collecting fifty new and provocative essays that chart the future of preservation. The commentators include leading preservation professionals, historians, writers, activists, journalists, architects, and urbanists. The essays offer a distinct vision for the future and address related questions, including: Who is a preservationist? What should be preserved? Why? How? What stories do we tell in preservation? How does preservation contribute to the financial, environmental, social, and cultural well-being of communities? And if the 'arc of the moral universe...bends towards justice,' how can preservation be a tool for achieving a more just society and world?"--Provided by publishe
Download or read book Glen Ridge Historic Design Guidelines written by Steven Smolyn and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HPC created Design Guidelines for the Glen Ridge Historic District to codify the long-standing design principles utilized in the review and approval of renovations, repairs, and expansion of properties in Glen Ridge. Funded by a grant from the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service, these guidelines provide an easy-to-use reference document for residents, architects, and contractors to plan projects and facilitate the HPCs design review process. The Design Guidelines are intended to further the appreciation of the architecture, setting, and history of Glen Ridge, to help ensure consistency in local decision-making, and to benefit property owners by clarifying community expectations. These Design Guidelines offer information on the rehabilitation of existing buildings, including new additions and new construction, to offer a common body of knowledge for all participants in the review process, including Commission members. The HPC recognized that applying design guidelines is often challenging, especially in Glen Ridge, where there is so much variety in the architecture. These Design Guidelines are intended to codify the objective basis for the HPC's decisions and help increase public awareness of historically appropriate design. However, the Design Guidelines do not offer all of the answers or solutions to a homeowner or design team as good architectural design cannot be achieved only by applying a set of rules. The challenge for both the homeowner and the HPC member is knowing how to apply the Design Guidelines to make sound judgments that will help preserve the architectural character of Glen Ridge while also allowing expressions of change and adaptation.
