Book Conservation of Historic Buildings

Download or read book Conservation of Historic Buildings written by Bernard Feilden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1982 Sir Bernard Feilden's Conservation of Historic Buildings has become the standard text for architects and others involved in the conservation of historic structures. Leading practitioners around the world have praised the book as being the most significant single volume on the subject to be published. This third edition revises and updates a classic book, including completely new sections on conservation of Modern Movement buildings and non-destructive investigation. The result of the lifetime's experience of one of the world's leading architectural conservators, the book comprehensively surveys the fundamental principles of conservation in their application to historic buildings, and provides the basic information needed by architects, engineers and surveyors for the solution of problems of architectural conservation in almost every climatic region of the world. This edition is organized into three complementary parts: in the first the structure of buildings is dealt with in detail; the second focuses attention on the causes of decay and the materials they affect; and the third considers the practical role of the architect involved in conservation and rehabilitation. As well as being essential reading for architects and others concerned with conservation, many lay people with various kinds of responsibility for historic buildings will find this clearly written, jargon-free work a fruitful source of guidance and information.

Book Report of the Committee on Preservation of Historic Monuments and Scenic Beauties

Committee on Preservation of Historic Monuments and Scenic Beauties and published by . This book was released on 1923 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important and early statement on the importance of historic preservation in a report prepared by the A.I.A. Committee on Preservation of Historic Monuments and Scenic Beauties, possibly a predecessor to the Committee on Preservation of Historic Buildings. The committee members outline the current state of historic preservation in America, with regional summaries for New England, New York, South Atlantic States, New Orleans, Chicago, and the Pacific Coast. They note that the preservation of buildings and monuments often falls to local and regional organizations such as the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, and the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society, based in New York. The A.I.A. Committee argues that its own function lies "(i) where monuments of really national importance are threatened, either with destruction, or with harmful modification. Other fields for its activity lie (ii) in the initiation and support of policies which may be of general benefit; and (iii) in the conduct of a campaign of education both of architects and of the public as to the proper methods of treatment of old buildings."

Giving Preservation a History explores the long history of historic preservation: how preservation movements have taken a leading role in shaping American urban space and development; how historic preservation battles have reflected broader social forces; and what the changing nature of historic preservation means for efforts to preserve national, urban, and local heritage. The second edition adds several new essays addressing key developing areas in the field by major new voices. The new essays represent the broadening range of scholarship on historic preservation generated since the publication of the first edition, taking better account of the role of cultural diversity and difference within the field while exploring the connections between preservation and allied concerns such as environmental sustainability, LGBTQ and nonwhite identity, and economic development.
