The History of Rome in 12 Buildings: A Travel Companion to the Hidden Secrets of The Eternal City is compelling, concise, and fun, and takes you behind the iconic buildings to reveal the hidden stories of the people that forged the Roman Empire. Typical travel guides provide torrents of information but deny their readers depth and perspective. In this gap is the really good stuff--the stories that make the buildings come alive and vividly enhance any trip to Rome. The History of Rome in 12 Buildings will immerse you in the world of the Romans, one full of drama, intrigue, and scandal. With its help, you will be able to trace the rise and fall of the ancient world's greatest superpower: Find the last resting spot of Julius Caesar. Join Augustus as he offers sacrifices to the gods. Discover the lie on the faade of the Pantheon. Walk in the footsteps of Jesus. And so much more.

Book The Column of Marcus Aurelius

Download or read book The Column of Marcus Aurelius written by Martin Beckmann and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important monuments of Imperial Rome and at the same time one of the most poorly understood, the Column of Marcus Aurelius has long stood in the shadow of the Column of Trajan. In The Column of Marcus Aurelius, Martin Beckmann makes a thorough study of the form, content, and meaning of this infrequently studied monument. Beckmann employs a new approach to the column, one that focuses on the process of its creation and construction, to uncover the cultural significance of the column to the Romans of the late second century A.D. Using clues from ancient sources and from the monument itself, this book traces the creative process step by step from the first decision to build the monument through the processes of planning and construction to the final carving of the column's relief decoration. The conclusions challenge many of the widely held assumptions about the value of the column's 700-foot-long frieze as a historical source. By reconstructing the creative process of the column's sculpture, Beckmann opens up numerous new paths of analysis not only to the Column of Marcus Aurelius but also to Roman imperial art and architecture in general.

Book Historic and Monumental Rome

Download or read book Historic and Monumental Rome written by Charles Isidore Hemans and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic and Monumental Rome: A Handbook for the Students of Classical and Christian Antiquity in the Italian Capital Having been urged by friends and acquaintances to prepare a second edition of a work in two small volumes: The Story of Monuments in Rome and its Environs (Florence, 1865), I have, seeing how much the aspects of the subject have changed and its field become enlarged within late years, not only amplified but entirely re-written my former work - and have incorporated in these pages, with more or less alteration, several papers read before the British and American Archaeological Society in Rome. The ground of Christian antiquities in and near that city is one I have gone over, with fuller treatment than is here attempted, in another volume: "Ancient Christianity and Sacred Art in Italy." Having quitted Rome in the Summer of 1873, and not returned thither since, I refer in these pages to the state of things there existent up to that time, alluding to Monasteries and Convents, where I have occasion to mention ruins on their premises, as though the cloisters were still inhabited by their former inmates. The law for suppressing such institutions had been enacted by the Italian Parliament, but not carried out, before the end of tho month (June, 1873) in which I last saw the "Eternal City" after residing there for many years. Book The Eternal City

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most visited places in the world, Rome attracts millions of tourists each year to walk its storied streets and see famous sites like the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Trevi Fountain. Yet this ancient city’s allure is due as much to its rich, unbroken history as to its extraordinary array of landmarks. Countless incarnations and eras merge in the Roman cityscape. With a history spanning nearly three millennia, no other place can quite match the resilience and reinventions of the aptly nicknamed Eternal City. In this unique and visually engaging book, Jessica Maier considers Rome through the eyes of mapmakers and artists who have managed to capture something of its essence over the centuries. Viewing the city as not one but ten “Romes,” she explores how the varying maps and art reflect each era’s key themes. Ranging from modest to magnificent, the images comprise singular aesthetic monuments like paintings and grand prints as well as more popular and practical items like mass-produced tourist plans, archaeological surveys, and digitizations. The most iconic and important images of the city appear alongside relatively obscure, unassuming items that have just as much to teach us about Rome’s past. Through 140 full-color images and thoughtful overviews of each era, Maier provides an accessible, comprehensive look at Rome’s many overlapping layers of history in this landmark volume. The first English-language book to tell Rome’s rich story through its maps, The Eternal City beautifully captures the past, present, and future of one of the most famous and enduring places on the planet.
