Book Land Use Land Cover and Soil Sciences Volume I

Download or read book Land Use Land Cover and Soil Sciences Volume I written by Willy H. Verheye and published by EOLSS Publishers Co.. This book was released on 2009-09-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia of Land Use, Land Cover and Soil Sciences is a component of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Land is one of our most precious assets. It represents space, provides food and shelter, stores and filters water, and it is a base for urban and industrial development, road construction, leisure and many other social activities. Land is, however not unlimited in extent, and even when it is physically available its use is not necessarily free, either because of natural limitations (too cold, too steep, too wet or too dry, etc.) or because of constraints of access or land tenure. This 7-volume set contains several chapters, each of size 5000-30000 words, with perspectives, applications and extensive illustrations. It carries state-of-the-art knowledge in the fields of Land Use, Land Cover and Soil Sciences and is aimed, by virtue of the several applications, at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

Book An Agrarian History of South Asia

Download or read book An Agrarian History of South Asia written by David Ludden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1999, David Ludden's book offers a comprehensive historical framework for understanding the regional diversity of agrarian South Asia. Adopting a long-term view of history, it treats South Asia not as a single civilization territory, but rather as a patchwork of agrarian regions, each with their own social, cultural and political histories. The discussion begins during the first millennium, when farming communities displaced pastoral and tribal groups, and goes on to consider the development of territoriality from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Subsequent chapters consider the emergence of agrarian capitalism in village societies under the British, and demonstrate how economic development in contemporary South Asia continues to reflect the influence of agrarian localism. As a comparative synthesis of the literature on agrarian regimes in South Asia, the book promises to be a valuable resource for students of agrarian and regional history as well as of comparative world history.

Book Land Atmospheric Research Applications in South and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Land Atmospheric Research Applications in South and Southeast Asia written by Krishna Prasad Vadrevu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume sheds new light on the impact of rapid Land Use/Cover Changes (LU/CC) on greenhouse gases (GHG’s) and aerosol emissions in South and Southeast Asia. Several countries in South/Southeast Asia have the highest population growth rates in the world, which is the main cause for LU/CC. Conversion of dense forests to agricultural areas and then to residential and urban areas is most commonly observed in South/Southeast Asian countries with a significant release of GHG’s and aerosols. The book showcases several case studies on the use of remote sensing and geospatial technologies to quantify biomass burning and air pollution impacts, aerosol pollution, LU/CC, and impacts on ecosystem services. The book also includes articles on regional initiatives in research, capacity building, and training. The authors of this book are international experts in the field, and their contributions highlight significant drivers and impacts of air pollution in South/Southeast Asia. Readers will discover the latest tools and techniques, in particular, the use of satellite remote sensing and geospatial technologies for quantifying GHG’s, aerosols and pollution episodes in this region.

Book Population Land Use and Environment

Download or read book Population Land Use and Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population, Land Use, and Environment: Research Directions offers recommendations for future research to improve understanding of how changes in human populations affect the natural environment by means of changes in land use, such as deforestation, urban development, and development of coastal zones. It also features a set of state-of-the-art papers by leading researchers that analyze population-land useenvironment relationships in urban and rural settings in developed and underdeveloped countries and that show how remote sensing and other observational methods are being applied to these issues. This book will serve as a resource for researchers, research funders, and students.

Book Terrestrial Carbon Observation

Download or read book Terrestrial Carbon Observation written by Josef Cihlar and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarises the discussions and recommendations of a workshop held in 2001, within the framework of the Terrestrial Carbon Observation (TCO) initiative. This workshop focused on the development of a systematic and collaborative approach to improving "in situ" or ground-based carbon data availability. The benefits of improved "in situ" terrestrial carbon observation will mean that countries can make more informed decisions related to the sustainable use and management of land resources.

Book Effects of Land Use Change on Atmospheric CO2 Concentrations

Download or read book Effects of Land Use Change on Atmospheric CO2 Concentrations written by Virginia H. Dale and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger C. Dahlman Environmental Sciences Division U.S. Department of Energy Washington, D.C. The potential for humans to alter Earth's atmosphere has been recognized since the end of the 19th century when Arrhenius estimated that a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide could alter the atmospheric radiation balance and raise average global temperature. Today, atmospheric CO concentrations play an important part in the 2 climate-change debate. Sources and sinks of CO associated with land use can be 2 significant determinants of the rate and magnitude of atmospheric CO change. 2 Combustion of fossil fuels and the deforestation associated with land-use change both contribute CO to the atmosphere; in contrast, biological processes on land create 2 potential sinks for the excess CO . Thus, land-use change and associated biological 2 processes become important elements in assessments of future atmospheric CO 2 increase; land-cover properties also affect the Earth's albedo, which is a climate feedback.

Book Asian Change in the Context of Global Climate Change

Download or read book Asian Change in the Context of Global Climate Change written by James Galloway and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly two-thirds of the world's population live in Asia, and many countries in that region are currently undergoing very rapid industrial, agricultural and economic development. The Framework Convention on Climate Change constrains developed countries with regard to their future emissions of greenhouse gases, but recognizes the special needs of developing countries. There is growing appreciation of the ways in which developing countries in the Asian region both contribute to global changes (by altering biogeochemical pathways and cycles) and are themselves affected by those changes. This volume uses the intellectual efforts and findings of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) community to provide the first integrated analysis of the interactions between global change and Asian change, giving particular attention to China's role. The book will be of interest to readers in a wide range of academic disciplines (natural sciences and socio-economic) and for those involved in national and international policy development relevant to global change.
